I agree.  The update to the decoders needs to be made.  If you didn't
already know it, the decoded GRID files will be HUGE!  The reason for this
is that the grib file for each model time step is something like 24 MB.
After McIDAS gets through decoding this into a GRID file, it will be
many times larger.  A couple of projects may help us out of this resource
hog:  the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has been working on a grib
ADDE server (so we could access the data from the original grib file);
I have plans to write an ADDE server for gridded data in GEMPAK format.
