20050627: McIDAS ADDE Servers

Hi Jim,

>I've noticed this problem before, but I could usually count on
>motherlode.ucar.edu (128.117.15.119) working for McIDAS ADDE RTGINI data.
>However, the latest data on it is from 23 June.

Sorry! A change was made on the 23rd to separate the NEXRAD composite
images from the NOAAPORT GINI images. During the change, the
cron-initiated script that changes a 'current day' link for the
NOAAPORT GINI data broke. I just fixed it, so you should be able to
look at current GINI data from ADDE.UCAR.EDU (aka MOTHERLODE.UCAR.EDU).

By the way, even though the RTGINI dataset still exists on adde.ucar.edu
the preferred GINI dataset group names are:

GINICOMP - NOAAPORT composite satellite images in GINI format
GINIEAST - NOAAPORT GOES-East images in GINI format
GINIWEST - NOAAPORT GOES-West images in GINI format

>I've repointed to the other following sites:
>
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI TWISTER.MILLERSVILLE.EDU
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI BIGBIRD.TAMU.EDU
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI ATM.GEO.NSF.GOV
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI ADDE.UNIDATA.UCAR.EDU
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI CACIMBO.GGY.UGA.EDU
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI STRATUS.AL.NOAA.GOV
>#dataloc.k ADD RTGINI PAPAGAYO.UNL.EDU
>
>but have had little success in getting any current data,

The reason for this is that the other servers do not have RTGINI
defined as an ADDE dataset. They do have GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and
GINIWEST defined, however.

>although
>CACIMBO.GGY.UGA.EDU returns data--it was from last October

The NOAAPORT ingest system at UGA has been down for a few months
now -- roof repairs required that their satellite dish be removed
and there was no money provided to align the dish after reinstallation (!).

>and
>PAPAGAYO.UNL.EDU yields data from last August. I get blank images for the
>other sites except for basically no response (request seems to hang) from
>ADDE.UNIDATA.UCAR.EDU.

ADDE.UNIDATA.UCAR.EDU was never intended to be a public ADDE site.
Firewall restrictions on the machine now prevent it from being accessed
outside of the unidata.ucar.edu domain.

>These sites are listed in
>
>http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/mcidas/adde_servers.html
>
>as hosting GINI ADDE data.

ADDE.UNIDATA.UCAR.EDU is not contained in the list on purpose. RTGINI
is also not mentioned in the list, but GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and GINIWEST
are.

Checking...

PAPAGAYO.UNL.EDU has current data for GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and GINIWEST.
ATM.GEO.NSF.GOV has current data for GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and GINIWEST.
STRATUS.AL.NOAA.GOV has current data for GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and GINIWEST.

BIGBIRD.TAMU.EDU server doesn't return info in a reasonable amount of
time.
TWISTER.MILLERSVILLE.EDU server doesn't return info in a reasonable amount of
time.

Given the slow/non response of bigbird and twister, I am removing them
from the list of freely accessible ADDE servers until we can figure out
why they are so slow/not working. I think I will do the same for
cacimbo until I am informed that the UGA NOAAPORT dish has been
successfully aligned.

>Motherlode is not listed, yet that has been the one
>that had been working until June 23rd.

MOTHERLODE.UCAR.EDU is ADDE.UCAR.EDU.

>Our own ADDE site (pscwx.plymouth.edu) is currently offline for ADDE as we are
>doing alot of server reconfiguration and consolidation.

Given your reconfiguration at Plymouth, should I also remove PSCWX?

>Has something changed?

I have been trying to get folks to use the GINICOMP, GINIEAST, and GINIWEST
ADDE dataset groups for over three years, and most have migrated to
their use. Some sites still have RTGINI defined (like ADDE.UCAR.EDU),
but I would like to see it disappear.

Cheers,

Tom
