From new supervisors to the experienced ones, faculty members all benefit from gathering to discuss and exchange their experiences and supervision practices. Increasingly, research is focusing on the study of best practices for graduate supervision given the need to enhance the student/supervisor relationship and students’ satisfaction with the quality of supervision. Offering educational development opportunities for graduate supervisors is complicated and needs more attention from universities. This paper aims to shed some light on the role of graduate supervisors, the factors that contribute to a successful graduate supervision experience, the factors that contribute to the complexity of graduate supervision with a discussion of different types of support for a successful graduate supervision and lastly, by introducing the design of a MOOC that focuses on Quality Graduate Su...

In alignment with the program goal for graduate scholars of the profession, this course-based program adopted an inquiry-based signature pedagogy grounded in the innovative practice of research-based learning. As part of this study, we explored broader program structures, including the cohort-based model, course sequencing and research ethics approval processes, which situate the research-based learning experiences. Several research questions framed our investigation into the experiences of online students who are engaged in a research-active MEd program. Analysis of survey and focus group information contributes to this mixed-methods case study and provides insights into implications for research-based learning in online course-based graduate programs.

In this article, eight academic women adopt a participatory process of inter-relational reflexivity to reflect upon our interdisciplinary research and propose a best-practice framework for sustained effectiveness of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The context for the professional learning was the teaching of graduate level education courses in which action research, in conjunction with a cohort-based, collaboratory approach to learning, was used to facilitate students' design and enactment of site-based action research. Action research was used as a research methodology by course instructors who reflected on the design of the course and their pedagogical practices in order to engage in continuous quality improvement. The collaboration took place over a two-year period in which the instructors taught multiple online sections of the course. Using action research to collectively deepen understanding about teaching action research proved to be a valuable reflective experience for the instructors and continues to inform ongoing instructional design processes and the development of future research agenda...

We broach our considerations to delineate the complexity of improving curriculum by tracing how the iterative process of action research informed the core findings from the research. The broad framework informing our action research approach includes: (1) planning; (2) observing and acting; (3) critical reflection; and (4) engaging in continuous iterations of this process. Specifically, our collective inquiry takes up the role of reflection within action research cycles to support us in better understanding curriculum review and improvement.

In this paper, we discuss two methodological approaches that have strengthened our own research of schools systems: Social Network Analysis and the Social World Arenas framework. We suggest that these analytical approaches are useful tools for studying complex adaptive systems in education and provide the means to improve teachers' scholarship of teaching and learning.

In this paper, we discuss some key ideas on how an intervention, a video game design and building process, was implemented as an innovative practice in four grade 6 social studies classes at a Calgary charter school. Utilizing a design-based research approach, the research design team explored and evaluated the effectiveness of the design in addressing the intervention and learning goals, and list some key findings and implications from the study.

The research took place in a classroom and a school makerspace, where students could design, ideate, and construct prototypes using high and low tech materials and tools. The purpose of the research was to determine how teachers, in developing makerspace knowledge, pedagogy, and practice might support their students. A researcher and the teacher collaboratively planned, enacted, and reflected on three iterations of making, which focused on curriculum topics in science, mathematics, and social studies. Data showed that both the teacher and her students, in navigating the figured world of makerspace, were able to take advantage of situational opportunities to improvise with artifacts, social discourses, and cultural structures. These improvisations in the makerspace carried over to the classroom, leading to a sense of agency and identity on t...

This can impact their overall wellbeing and ability to master key professional competencies. We explored, in this study, the extent to which peer mentorship promotes psychosocial wellbeing and the development of professional competencies in medical residency education. Methods We searched six databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Academic Research Complete, ERIC, Education Research Complete) for studies on peer mentoring relationships in medical residency. We selected any study where authors reported on outcomes associated with peer mentoring relationships among medical residents. We applied no date, language, or study design limits to this review. Results We included nine studies in this systematic review. We found that medical residents received essential psychosocial supports from peers, and motivation to develop academic and career competencies. Medical residents in peer-ment...

Qualitative data from reflective journals maintained by instructors who taught multiple sections of a masters research course over a two-year period informed the exploration of responsive pedagogy. Action research is discussed as a methodology used by instructors to reflect on practice in order to engage in continuous quality improvement of learning in higher education. The authors share how action research proved to be a valuable methodology used to guide this reflective experience and can be used to inform ongoing instructional design processes and future research.

Our School of Education offers high quality professional graduate programs that increase access and respond directly to complex needs and problems of practice in education. We describe the design and design thinking approach our faculty collectively undertook to redesign our professional graduate programs. The design was guided by a commitment to research informed and research active learning experiences that enable professionals to develop expertise, draw upon evidence, and act with integrity as they lead innovation and change in educational organizations. The program design provides professionals with opportunities to complete their graduate program in both blended and online formats. Degree programs are cohort based, discipline focused, and coherently structured. Many of our specialized ...

In this paper, we discuss some key ideas on how an intervention, the design and building of digital video games, was implemented and explored, to address this challenge, in four grade 6 social studies classes at a Calgary charter school, utilizing a design-based research framework. Findings revealed that: (i) to effectively implement this intervention in the classroom context, teachers needed to shift/modify their design of instructional activities compared to how they would normally design them in their social studies classes to teach the same chosen content; and (ii) the intervention, as implemented, seem to have the potential to be an effective innovative pedagogy for deep learning and one that promotes the intellectual engagemen...
