Elemento caratterizzante di una struttura ospedaliera è, inoltre, la presenza di tecnologie molto eterogenee legate alle diverse tipologie di impianti e apparecchiature presenti. Structural Assessment of Santa Maria Maddalena Church in Ischia Island (Italy) by Experimental Modal Analysis Under Operational Conditions

Within the inspected damaged churches, a very interesting case study is represented by Santa Maria Maddalena church, located on the hill of Casamicciola Terme, near to the epicentre. The church of Santa Maria Maddalena can be considered a 'unicum', since it was built in 1896, after the catastrophic earthquake of 1883, with a 'mixed' structure made mainly of yellow tuff blocks walls strengthened by iron profiles or wooden elements. Several examples of structures made of masonry walls with wooden elements embedded in the wall thickness, i.e. the so called 'baraccato system' are present in the island, while the use of iron profiles is rare. The paper is firstly aimed to present the results of detailed historical investigation, geometrical survey, damage status analysis and provisional safety assessment after the earthquake of 21 st August 2017. These activities were carried out in collaboration with the Campania Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage (MiBACT). Within such a collaboration, an in situ dynamic test was also performed under operational conditions. The setup and the results of this test are here presented in order to point out the main features of the structural system in terms of relevant modal parameters, both at global and local level.

An increasing interest towards modal based damage detection techniques has been observed in the l... more An increasing interest towards modal based damage detection techniques has been observed in the last years in the field of civil engineering, as a consequence of the development of several algorithms for automated identification and tracking of modal parameters based on Operational Modal Analysis methods. Even if the continuous monitoring of modal parameters has been proved to have a large potential in performance and health assessment of civil engineering structures, one of the main drawbacks of modal based damage detection is related to the sensitivity of natural frequency estimates to environmental and operational conditions. These can cause changes of the same order of magnitude of those induced by damage. The reliability of analyses is also frequently jeopardized by the need of defining appropriate structural and dynamic models. Local response of selected macro elements and global response of the structure are usually distinguished. In this paper, some remarks on the discrimination between local and global behavior of architectural complexes are proposed. The study is based on a well-established vector correlation index frequently used in the field of experimental modal analysis. Results of application of the novel approach to explanatory case studies are reported, pointing out how a rational methodology can guide towards the selection of the most appropriate analysis procedure.

The most recent algorithms for automated identification and tracking of the modal parameters of s... more The most recent algorithms for automated identification and tracking of the modal parameters of structures in operational conditions have fostered the spread of vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring in civil engineering. Continuously monitoring damage sensitive features based on the estimated modal properties makes possible the remote assessment of the health state of structures. One of the main drawbacks of modal based damage detection is the sensitivity of natural frequency estimates to environmental and operational conditions that can cause changes of the same order of magnitude of those induced by damage. Thus, the estimates have to be depurated from the effects of environmental factors in order to effectively detect damage. However, a straightforward identification of the factors influencing the estimates and, therefore, their measure are often unfeasible. In this case statistical tools are the sole option to correct the estimates without measuring environmental and operational factors. The present paper deals with an explanatory case study where the influence of environmental factors on dynamic response and tensile load of a cable in operational conditions is investigated. Among the various approaches to compensate the influence of environmental and operational factors, attention has been mainly focused on robust blind source separation techniques. After a qualitative analysis of the influence of environmental factors on the dynamics of the cable, different approaches are tested to compensate environmental effects. The performance of statistical tools not requiring the information about the temperature, such as Principal Component Analysis and Second Order Blind Identification, is compared with that of methods based on temperature measurements, such as regression methods. Quantitative comparisons in terms of predictive performance are presented. The obtained results are definitely partial and additional investigations are necessary. However, they remark the effectiveness of statistical tools such as the Principal Component Analysis for removal of environmental effects in the context of continuous monitoring applications. doi: 10.12783/SHM2015/37
