David Espinoza has been the Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach since the 2018-19 season. During the 2023-24 school year, he was elevated to director of track and field and cross country.
Espinoza came to UPIKE after spending time as the head coach at Lourdes University in Sylvania, OH. At Lourdes, Espinoza served as the first head coach for the Grey Wolves' Track & Field as well as Cross Country programs. Espinoza had a successful tenure at Lourdes that included a national qualifier in discus in the Grey Wolves' first season as a program. In the same season, he also coached seven Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Academic Team members and six NAIA Scholar-Athletes.Â
During the 2020-21 outdoor season, Noah Thomas became the first national qualifier under Espinoza. Thomas qualified in the discus throw and placed 19th overall at the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Thomas also became the first indoor national qualifier in program history during the 2021-22 season (weight throw), while qualifying for outdoor nationals for the second time in the discus. In 2021-22, Noah was named Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Thomas had two podium finishes in indoor, had two podium finishes in outdoor and was Mid-South Conference hammer champion. Â
During the 2021-2022 season, Valerie Kendrick had a great freshman year under Espinoza. Kendrick had a podium finish in indoor and had the first ever podium finish in UPIKE women's track and field for discus. Verlecia Scarlett also had a podium finish under Espinoza.Â
Under Espinoza, the men's track and field squad has been USTFCCCA All-Academic three consecutive years. The women's track and field team was named USTFCCCAÂ for the first time this year as well.Â
Bluffton College is Espinoza's alma mater where he was a member of the track and field team while also competing in cross country.Â
David Espinoza is the son of Tammy Espinoza and has two brothers - Josh and Bryant, and one sister - Melissa. Espinoza currently resides in Pikeville, KY.Â
