However, as was identified by this paper, in the group of domestics big budget productions, a paradox is emerging -blockbusters with great box office earnings usually could not achieve a good audience rating score. By studying and comparing Hollywood and Chinese productions, with a focus on their visual effects (VFX) aspect, this paper demonstrated that the paradox was resulted by a complex interaction among various factors in the production, distribution, exhibition, and reception stages of the Chinese blockbusters. This paper ended with several suggestions for Chinese filmmakers to improve their VFX-intensive productions so that they can better compete in a global market.
