Of the many decisi there remains one important dec of being born in Zion, Territory Held, Jr., for his Utah beginnin the height of his fame as an illust known for his images of the lett Age, Held was, for a time, the mos eration, but he never shunned his Utah roots. His reminiscences, selectively published below, reveal a nostalgic sentiment for Utah that is as whimsical and lively as his well-loved illustrations. John Held, Jr., was born in Salt Lake City, January 10, 1889, the first of six children born to John and Annie Evans Held. His parents, though both of humble means, were well-schooled in music and the arts. Their marriage brought together maternal and paternal talents in performance, drama, dance, instrumental music, and visual art. With his parents' prominence to goad him along, it was difficult for young John to avoid a life in the limelight.3 In 1870, Held's father and aunt were brought as children to the United States from Geneva, Switzerland, by John R. Park, president of the University of Deserei; the children were raised in the Park household until their parents, Jacques and Marie Held, arrived in Salt Lake City ten years later.4 During their adoptive life in the Park home, the Held children were known as "Johnnie Park" and "Hortense Park," were baptized into the LDS church (on July 8, 1877), and were raised in an atmosphere of cultural refinement and intellectual growth.5 Later, John Sr. became a beloved bandmaster, musician, and entertainer in Salt Lake City and ran a successful engraving business.6

The significance of this particular incident is that West's apocalyptic Death on the Pale Horse found an audience among one of America's eminent millenarian groups. West's picture has long been discussed in the context of British apocalypticism, and, although it was met with some ambivalence at its American debut in 1836, it may have been viewed with some appreciation from American millenarian sects such as Mormonism. As historian J. F. C. Harrison has stated, "It is difficult to estimate the impact that such pictures made," but the art of romantic painters "echoed the warnings of millenarian writers" and were indeed an aspect of the "sub-culture" of millenarianism.2 One author has maintained that the apocalyptic nature 1.

Contributing painters looked to American historical artists for stylistic inspiration and used biblical imagery to convey that Book of Mormon peoples were from the Near East. They often created settings reminiscent of ancient Central America, including Mayan temples and ruins. The book was used widely in Primary and Sunday School, and its appeal may have contributed to the Deseret News's 1890 call for more Mormon-specific religious art to aid in the classroom. While modern readers may not be impressed by the quality of nineteenth-century artwork included in Reynolds's book, The Story of the Book of Mormon was significant in being the first to establish what the characters and setting of the Book of Mormon may have looked like.

Paintings, illustrations, and graphic works served a devotional function among the early Church members. Not only did the Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo use images to memorialize the Church's founding story, but they frequently placed images in their places of worship to remind them to maintain reverential focus on New Testament themes and the life of Jesus Christ. From the time the first settlers in Utah built permanent meetinghouses, they decorated the spaces with images that focused their thoughts on the Church's gospel. 1
