VMI Baseball takes series finale 3-2 at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The VMI baseball team got excellent work from three pitchers Sunday to defeat The Citadel 3-2 in the last game of a Southern Conference series in Joseph P. Riley Park.

With the win, VMI evens its record at 24-24 and is 8-9 in SoCon play

How it happened offensively:
After three scoreless innings, VMI struck in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on second, The Citadel intentionally walked Cole Jenkins and Jimmy Koza made them pay with a two-run triple. Trey Morgan brought Zac Morris home with a single in the fifth to put VMI ahead 3-0.

How it happened on the mound:
Freshman Marcus Van Alstine got his first collegiate start on the hill and made the most of it, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for his first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Jack Thompson allowed just one hit in his 1 2/3 innings of relief and Will Riley gave up just one hit and one walk in three innings to earn the save. Van Alstine earned the win, giving up just two hits and the three Keydet pitchers allowed just four hits combined on the day.

Highlights:
*Morgan had two hits and a stolen base while Koza had two hits and a walk
*Owen Prince drew two walks and stole a base
*Thomas Rollauer had both RBI for The Citadel (21-23/6-9)
