CHARLESTON, S.C. – The VMI baseball team got excellent work from three pitchers Sunday to defeat The Citadel 3-2 in the last game of a Southern Conference series in Joseph P. Riley Park.
With the win, VMI evens its record at 24-24 and is 8-9 in SoCon play
How it happened offensively:
After three scoreless innings, VMI struck in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on second, The Citadel intentionally walked
Cole Jenkins and
Jimmy Koza made them pay with a two-run triple.
Trey Morgan brought
Zac Morris home with a single in the fifth to put VMI ahead 3-0.
How it happened on the mound:
Freshman
Marcus Van Alstine got his first collegiate start on the hill and made the most of it, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for his first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
Jack Thompson allowed just one hit in his 1 2/3 innings of relief and
Will Riley gave up just one hit and one walk in three innings to earn the save. Van Alstine earned the win, giving up just two hits and the three Keydet pitchers allowed just four hits combined on the day.
