For his 15th album, guitarist Bobby Broom has assembled choice live recordings by his finely tuned organ trio, The Organi-Sation, with Ben Paterson on Hammond B3 and drummer Kobie Watkins. Formed in 2014 at the urging of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the trio toured with Steely Dan that year as their opening act, performing nearly 50 shows. Since then, Broom has pored over board recordings of those shows and chosen five favorites, included here.
The album is rounded out by 2019 performances recorded at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, after the release of the group's 2018 debut album, "Soul Fingers." The trio's wide-ranging repetoire includes versions of hits by Cream ("Layla") and Stevie Wonder ("Superstition") as well as "The Jitterbug Waltz," "Speak Low," and "Tadd's Delight." Says Broom: "It's amazing the chemistry that we were able to develop. You can hear the contrast between concert stage and club venue stage; both display the group's dynamics and telepathy."
Pianist/composer Joey Alexander’s seventh album, Continuance, is the story of a critically acclaimed artist at the peak of his creativity, not only as a bandleader but as a celebrated composer. At 20 years old, Alexander has gathered his touring band, consisting of Kris Funn (bass) and John Davis (drums), to translate their unique improvisation on the stage to the studio with the help of trumpeter Theo Croker. Featuring five newly written original compositions and breathtaking renditions of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (made famous by Bonnie Raitt) and the popular hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” Alexander is bound to make new waves on a global level.
Adding to her lovingly-long list of Brazilian repertoire and recordings, five-time Grammy Nominee Karrin Allyson embarks on yet another inspired Brazilian adventure, this time including a very special pairing with the legendary singer, composer and guitarist Rosa Passos. Long admiring each other's work, this vocal match made in heaven features Ms. Passos on two songs with Karrin - her own composition "Dunas" (with new English lyrics penned by Karrin) and the classic Vinicius de Moraes song, "O Grande Amor." Karrin and her stellar band of Brazilian instrumentalists - Rafael Barata on drums and Vitor Goncalves on piano & accordion, along with guitarist Yotam Silberstein and bassist Harvie S - unfurl gorgeous classics such as "So Many Stars," "The Island," "Manha de Carnaval," "Flor de Lis," "Wave," and "Only Trust Your Heart," in a luxuriously grooving, sonic love letter to Brazil.

Oscar Peterson’s trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen is widely regarded as Peterson’s “classic trio,” considered by fans as the most popular and in-demand of his long and storied career (featured on releases such as 1963’s Night Train and 1964’s We Get Requests). Recorded during their creative peak in 1964 (5 years into their collaboration), this previously unheard and unreleased live performance is destined to become a fan favorite from the Oscar Peterson vaults. In his memoir Peterson reflects on the dedication that Ray and Ed brought to the group:
"In addition to our trio rehearsals, therefore, Ray would call his own rehearsals in his or Ed’s room and they would simply practice ‘time.’ They created a flexible and multi-faceted rhythmical language that they could apply to any musical statement I might make and enhance any direction I might choose. In short, they practiced ‘all the possibles.’”
Born from of a relentless global tour schedule, Samara Joy took her touring band, made up of other rising young jazz musicians, into the legendary Van Gelder Studios (the venerable studio from which A Love Supreme and so many of the great catalog records from Impulse and Blue Note were recorded) in February of 2024. Recorded across three days, Samara and her musicians were able to capture an incredible snapshot of who she is today and the promise of tomorrow. It’s a collection of standards, as well as one original and some of her first forays into lyric writing and features her singular voice, alongside arrangements and playing from this tight knit young group. The recording is this story of the community she’s created with a new generation of young players and serves as a studio rendering that delivers on the promise of the live show so many fans have seen them perform over the last year.
Cubop Lives! is an album born from a passion of the heart. As a musician who is so deeply steeped in the Jazz and Bebop tradition and so vivaciously immersed in the worlds of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Curtis found himself wanting to pay homage to the great musicians in whose steps he has trod who brought together the distinct fusion of these musical cultures. “I wanted to make a period piece album that brought a new perspective to an older style – one that wasn’t covered the way I thought it could be,” Curtis says. “Cubop Lives! points out the earliest of “jazz fusion” and the combination of cultures that related to each other socially, politically and, of course, musically.” Curtis’s love for the genres led not only to his meticulous curation of the pieces – both historic and original – but to the intentional selection of the band itself. “It takes musicians that have mastered their craft as well as understand complex jazz concepts and form,” Curtis says. “There are only a handful of people that can pull off this style of music as they do. These arrangements were developed to highlight each individual’s unique voice.” The album’s personnel list includes a cast of heavy-hitters within the world of Afro-Cuban Jazz: Willie Martinez (drums, voice, timbales), Camilo Molina (percussion),Reinaldo De Jesus (percussion, drums), and bandleader’s brother, Luques Curtis (bass).
