Perhaps the greatest component of GALA-ND/SMC's social justice is its support of the ND/SMC student gay, lesbian, and bisexual group, GLND/SMC (Gays and Lesbians of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College). As alumni/ae of these two institutions, we are all too familiar with and mindful of the difficulties faced by homosexual and bisexual undergraduates. Accordingly, GALA-ND/SMC endeavors to give continuing financial and moral support to GLND/SMC whenever possible.
To be sure, the events of the last few semesters--during which time the ND administration decided to bar GLND/SMC from the Counseling Center--have galvanized support for GLND/SMC from varied sources around campus and around the country. Not the least of these sources of support was GALA-ND/SMC, which organized a petition opposing the administration's move--GALA THUNDER--and published the names of the 150 gay, bisexual, and straight alumni who signed the petition in a two-page ad in The Observer.
