January 4, 2007 - Turner Networks' GameTap has a new competitor in the realm of on-demand gaming. Showtime Networks has teamed with Broadband Libraries LLC to form "On Broadband," which provides downloadable and online games for cable TV companies and broadband providers.
"While it might not seem like a natural, when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense for Showtime," Matthew Blank, Showtime Networks chairman and chief executive told The Associated Press. "We are used to dealing with a premium customer. We have the marketing and promotional expertise to be in those businesses."
On Broadband handles both the sale and delivery of games, but bears the name of the provider rather than the Showtime brand name. Planned for a spring debut, no titles or partners were announced. Pricing also remains unclear, though the service allows for subscriptions as well as free and paid individual game downloads.
