WordPress Schwag Cache

June 11th, 2007 · No Comments

If you’re in the Silicon Valley area, grab your GPSr and navigate to N 37° 11.329′, W 121° 50.846′. There you will find a geocache filled with WordPress schwag. Two .50 caliber ammo boxes hold WP stickers and t-shirts. You have your choice of black or red t-shirts.

To get there, start at the Mockingbird Hill entrance of Almaden Quicksilver Park at N 37° 11.594′, W 121° 50.191′. There is a big parking lot here as well as water and restrooms. Grab a map at the trail head and head out on New Almaden Trail. Take New Almaden trail approximately 1.4 miles until you reach N 37° 11.475′, W 121° 50.832′. From there, head uphill along an unmarked but well-used trail that runs between New Almaden trail and Randol trail. There’s no sign post, but the trail is easy to spot. Take this trail a quarter mile to get to the cache. If you want a big hint as to where to look (cheater), this gives it away. The cache consists of two ammo boxes. Make sure to check them both. Shirts are available from S to XXL in both men’s and women’s sizes. Please don’t bankrupt the cache. Take only one shirt per person. Stickers I have plenty of, so feel free to take extra stickers. Before leaving, make sure everything goes back in the ammo cans and that the cans are fully latched. From here, you can keep heading uphill for some nice views of Almaden Valley, Santa Clara Valley, and the Santa Cruz mountains. Use your new t-shirt to wipe the sweat from your brow as you climb.

Beware of Western Poison Oak while on your hike. It is everywhere. There are usually plenty of opportunities to observe wildlife. Be on the watch for deer, wild turkeys, California quail, birds of prey, lots of lizards, and gopher snakes. Mountain Lions live in this area, but they are a rare sighting. I’ve spotted a few coyotes in nearby parks, but never in Quicksilver.

Here are some photos of the route you will take, and here are photos from all over Almaden Quicksilver. Enjoy your hike, and leave a comment on this post if you visit the cache.

GNOME goes WordPress

June 10th, 2007 · 6 Comments

Jeff dropped a note mentioning that GNOME has gone with WordPress µ on blogs.gnome.org. I used to contribute bits and pieces to GNOME before being consumed by WordPress full time. I found out about WordPress through some GNOME developers. I took some of the GNOME philosophy with me to WordPress and found that Matt shared much of it. So I’m glad to see GNOME using WP and hope they will be as happy with it as I have been with GNOME.

Sandbox Design Competition

June 6th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Last week, Scott announced the Sandbox Designs Competition. I’m looking forward to seeing how this competition turns out. A good-looking style on top of the semantic, microformaty goodness of Sandbox might make for a good theme to bundle with WordPress. And I’m sure the Automattic crew will find some favorites from the competition to include on WordPress.com. Consider participating in or sponsoring the competition and help bring some new designs to the WP community while getting some good exposure.

In the Trunk

May 30th, 2007 · 21 Comments

With 2.2 released, we’ve been busy with 2.3. The last two weeks have seen a barrage of activity. Much of the work has gone into the new taxonomy design. This is almost fully implemented and shaping up nicely. The tagging feature that was pulled from 2.2 is back in 2.3 using this much better design. Also, those who dislike how link and post categories are combined can take heart. They are separated in 2.3.

Housekeeping has been another focus. The files in wp-admin were reorganized to make things easier to find. Code formatting and style is also being cleaned up as we sweep through the files.

Several bundled libraries were updated to the latest versions. TinyMCE is now at 2.1.1.1, Prototype is at 1.5.1, and script.aculo.us is at 1.7.1 beta 2. More updates to script.aculo.us and an update for TinyMCE Spellchecker are on the way.

Post and page management received some love from Michael Adams. Managing your draft and private posts and pages is now much easier thanks to some handy filters. This is available on wordpress.com if you want to check it out.

As always, you can watch the timeline to see whats going on with development.

My Workspace

May 16th, 2007 · 11 Comments

Web Worker Daily asks us to share pics of our workspaces. Okay, I’m game. Some time ago I simplified my work style. I got rid of the servers, the big desktop machines, the 5.1 stereo components, and the multiple display setups. I got rid of the big eight foot long desk. I now have two laptops and two small workspaces. The first is in a corner of my bedroom. This is my compact home office. I’m a bit of an organization freak, so I have storage boxes for everything. A magnetic bulletin board keeps track of the last few bits of paper correspondence that haven’t gone electronic (bills from the guvment, mostly).

My second workspace is a small satellite setup on my dining room table. I actually use this one quite a bit. It has a view of the reef aquarium, and Almaden Valley stretches out below the windows. It is also close to the kitchen, which is where the most essential piece of office equipment resides — the super-automatic espresso machine.
