If you have trouble downloading, please try this link: Redoable 1.1

Redoable 1.1 is now available and is compatible with both Wordpress 2.0.x and Wordpress 2.1

Redoable is built upon the popular K2 code, with some things changed, a couple of things removed and a whole bunch of things added.

Redoable 1.1 Released

The sidebar is module/widget ready, with over 20 different modules available to use. By deafult the sidebar will work without the need to add any modules, and will display the calendar, categories, tags, blogroll and listen and watch modules depending, of course, on whether you have the relevant plugins set up.

Two of the modules, ‘Listen’ and ‘Watch’, make use of categories in Links, you can set which category and how many links to display in the Redoable options panel. The idea of these is to provde links to music, movies etc that you might be enjoying at the time. This was based on a method described by Matt Brett.

Sidenotes will be shown on the homepage. The category and number of sidenotes can be set in the Redoable options panel. They are displayed using Matt’s Asides technique just as they are in K2.

As with K2 the Extended Live Archives can be setup from the Redoable options panel, and you can also enable the Archives page. I also added support for Alex King’s Articles plugin, and once the plugin is activated the Articles page can be turned on or off from within the Redoable options panel.

On top of all this there are countless tweaks here and there to just about everything, too many to list here and many are probably barely noticeable.

Note: Redoable is not a style for K2, it is an independant theme. You can have both K2 and Redoable installed on your blog at the same time as they do not share any config options and can be configured seperately.

Supported plugins

The following plugins are supported by Redoable ‘out-of-the-box’, and all are highly recommended. All you need to do is download them, add them to your plugins floder and activate them. If you know of any great plugins you would like to see in future releases leave a comment or send me an email.

Installation

  1. Download the Redoable package.
  2. Unpack, and upload to the wp-content/themes/ directory on your server.
  3. Login to your admin area and set Redoable as the current theme.
  4. Install and activate any of the above listed plugins.
  5. Enjoy.

Style Examples

Examples of how to use these styles is shown below. You can do this by clicking the ‘html mode’ button on the WYSIWYG toolbar. Alternately you can download the Rechuked Buttons Plugin which will add buttons to this same toolbar to allow you to use these styles.

Thankyou

Michael, Chris, Zeo, Steve, Ben and anyone else who has contributed to K2. Without K2 there would have been no starting point for my theme.

Tyler Longren for his Unwakeable theme which was also based on K2, and served as a good base to build Redoable from.

FamFamFam for the fantastic Silk icon set. There’s an icon for just about everything.

The authors of all the plugins listed above, they help make Redoable what I want to be.

Known Issues

There were a couple of things that I have been unable to completely fix so far, these are listed below. If you have any suggestions your help is always welcome. If you find any bugs please leave details of them in the support forum.

  • Some people are experiencing a problem where the comments and permalinks are all referring to the incorrect posts. As yet I have been unable to replicate this problem, and it doesn’t seem to happen on everyones blog. It could be related to the use of different permalink structures, but as yet I don’t have a solution for it.
  • Sidebar overlap issue. This hasn’t been completely fixed but the sidebar will now overlap on top of the footer instead of disappearing behind it when there is only a small amount of page contents.
  • LiveSearch doesn’t seem to work with custom permalinks. This has also been reported by other users of K2 (which Redoable is based on), but as yet no-one has had a good answer.

Azmi: I am looking at including an inverse style in the next release, and potentially the ability to change colours from within the admin area.

    Great theme Dean :).

I’m a bit noob in WP things so I have a little question about this theme, ¿how do you display the style examples (download, warning…) with this skin? I would like to know how can I display them in my blog using your theme.

    Thanks a lot.

zensure: I have just added a bit of info above about how you can apply those styles. All you need to do is add a class to the ‘p’ tag. Hope that helps.

at first, respect for that theme, looking brilliant!

but im having a problem with the sidebar..
when i use the custom settings everythings alright.
but when i use the sidebar modules thingy, it keeps on getting messed up.
the calendar/months list module is causing problems. the next module below it starts right under th last month.
have a look on my website to see what i mean..

i dont know whats happening there… maybe u have a slight idea?

    smo from germany.

smo: Thanks for the feedback, I am working on fixing that problem, its caused by the way that the month list is floated in that first module, it should definitely be fixed in the updated version which should be available in the next week or so.

First of all, congrats for the good work. I have a problem with the archives, I installed the latest ELA, but I cannot see anything on my archives page (http://totaltactics.org/archives/). On the Redoable options I chose to have Redoable set up ELA for me.

On another note, in the pages with short content, such as the archives, the sidebar background shortens too and the text on the sidebar doesn’t show properly anymore. Any way to fix this?

  13. 13 dean.j.robinson Jan 9th, 2007 at 9:44 am Quote

gillo: For the archives page, my suggestion would be to go to ‘manage pages’ and delete the archives page, then re-create the page manually and make sure to set the page template to ‘page-archives’, and don’t enter any conetent in the main text area.

I am still working on a fix for the sidebar display problem.

  14. 14 gillo Jan 10th, 2007 at 8:39 pm Quote

Dean: you said Livesearch doesn’t work. However it does on your site??? Furthermore, if I disable the widget, hwo can I have a normal search form??

  15. 15 dean.j.robinson Jan 10th, 2007 at 8:55 pm Quote

gillo: Yes, the problem with the livesearch seems to be with my proxy and not my site. It seems to have cached all my files and won’t load new ones if they are available.

For example I changed the css to fix a problem and numerous ‘hard’ refreshs were needed before it realised it need to load a new file. It really annoying from a developement point of view.

Can you confirm that when using the livesearch on my site, you get the results in the sidebar underneath the search box.

I will have to get back to you after I check about the search form.

  16. 16 gillo Jan 11th, 2007 at 2:45 am Quote

Dean: earlier on today I’ve seen exactly that, theresults underneath the search form. Now I don’t see them anymore and I get results only after I press return (and they appear in a very small font). However, on my site, they don’t appear at all, even after I press return.

On another note, I checked the size of the homepage and I found out that among the most “heavy” files, there are these two:

    22kb http://totaltactics.org/wp-content/themes/redoable/js/slider.js.php
    22kb http://totaltactics.org/wp-includes/js/prototype.js
Can you tell mw what they do and if I can slim something down? The page is more than 200kb!!!

  17. 17 dean.j.robinson Jan 11th, 2007 at 8:21 am Quote

gillo: slider.js.php was left over from the k2 theme on which Redoable was based. The file itself wasn’t actually included with Redoable, but if it does exist you can safely delete it, you can also remove the reference to it in the header.

prototype.js is required, it handles all the effects and ajax stuff, like LiveSearch, Live Comments etc. If more than one copy of prototype is loaded it seems to cause problems with LiveSearch. My recommendation would be to check if more than one copy of it being loaded.

You are using ShareThis and I have previously identified a bug/compatibility issue between it and Redoable. You will most likely need to modify the share-this code to remove the line where it includes prototype.js. ShareThis will still work, because prototype is already loaded.

The second inclusion of prototype seems to kill LiveSearch.

  18. 18 gillo Jan 11th, 2007 at 9:35 pm Quote

In my plug-in folder, I have two folders: ’share-this’ and ’share-this 1.3.1′. The first contains the icons and the file share-this.php. The second contains only the file prototype.js, maybe this can be a problem?

I removed the reference to ‘/wp-includes/js/prototype.js’ on the share-this.php file, and the reference to slider.js on the header.

Unfortunately, the search is still not working. When I search for something, not only it gives me no results, but when using livesearch, it also attaches a 404 page at the bottom of the page itself??

    Thanks for the help.

gillo: As I had mentioned above, LiveSearch (and Search to a certain degree) is broken in Redoable 1.0, I am running 1.1 on this site which is why LiveSearch (should) be working work. 1.1 is still in development and LiveSearch will be fully functional when it released.

The 404 page is because the livesearch script is looking for a page that doesn’t exist. I apologise for any confusion, I think I might has misread your first comment.

Ok, gotcha. Looking forward for the next release then. I might comment the search box then :)

  21. 21 Chris Jan 12th, 2007 at 10:35 am Quote

First off Dean thanks for a great K2 mod. Best one I’ve seen so far.

That being said, there’s a minor problem in my installation…not entirely sure if it’s on my end or if it’s found in the theme’s CSS anywhere. What’s happening on my end is when a single post is displayed (this happened with every post I clicked on), the comments section ends up referring to a different topic entirely. No matter what post I clicked on and visited the comments section, the comments seemed to be stuck on that certain topic.

Boggles my mind because I couldn’t find anything anywhere in the CSS, nothing in the single_post.php file that would allude to there being a problem.

Another quick note is that the Redoable logo in the footer overlaps my sidebar on single posts as well. Don’t know if that’s related or not, and that could be a simple CSS fix.

I had to go to another K2 style while I am troubleshooting the problem on my end, but already I miss Redoable. :-(

Once again great work Dean and thanks in advance for the follow up!!!

  22. 22 Chris Jan 12th, 2007 at 10:40 am Quote

Clarification to my comment previously — the comments section for each post all ended up referring an entirely different post than the one being shown. i.e. the comment section for post #5 actually posts comments for post #1. Same with posts #1, 2, 3 and 4…each of their comment sections thinks it’s post #1 as well. Kinda weird but it’s tough to explain.

Apologies for my lack of clarity above. God bless!

  23. 23 dean.j.robinson Jan 12th, 2007 at 10:56 am Quote

Chris: Thanks for the feedback. I am aware of the comment problem, it has been mentioned by some other users as well. That said it works fine here on my blog, and on my test installs, so I’m having a little trouble replicating the problem to try and find a fix for it.

It also appears this isn’t a problem for everyone, I know of a couple of other blogs using Redoable, and their comments and trackbacks work ok.

I am also working on fixing the overlap problem with the Redoable logo and the sidebar, both will hopefully be fixed in Redoable 1.1.

Love your theme - I’m having an issue though.

When I enable the wp-recent-comments plugin, my home and archive pages will only display 8 items, not including the sidebar posts. I haven’t touched the loop file, and I was thinking maybe there’s something not processing the plugin correctly?

When I enable the wp-recent-comments plugin, my home and archive pages will only display 8 items, not including the sidebar posts. I haven’t touched the loop file, and I was thinking maybe there’s something not processing the plugin correctly?

I don’t know about wp-recent-comments, is it enabled at the moment on your site?

Unless you are referring to wp-recent-links? Because the problem you describe sound very much like what happens when this plugin is activated. The thing is that it counts each link you add as a normal post. So, for example, if you set your blog to display 10 posts per page, and then you add 8 links, you will only get two ‘real’ posts, plus your 8 links.

Its all down to how the plugin works, and I didn’t really like that so I have re-written the plugin so that links are included in the count allowing you to have as many links as you want in addition to your regular posts.

I will try and release this plugin soon, as a few people have come across this same problem.

Hope that helps, sorry, if I’ve gone off track.

…I have Wordpress set to show 30 days, and it still only shows 8 posts and 3 sidebar posts, even in the archives when recent-links is enabled…

Ok, my guess is that its the 30 days thing thats causing the trouble. In Wordpress 2.1 you can nno longer choose X days, you only get the option of X posts, because I have coded it to work with WP2.1, and therefore X days only, that would most likely explain the problem.

I tried setting it to X days and that didn’t work. I probably screwed something up somewhere. I’ll upgrade Wordpress and see if that fixes it.

The upgrade didn’t solve it. I’ve been looking through the loop code and then the plugin code for the function rp_recentlinks_inline_merge and can’t find anything wrong. I can’t figure out how it could be a code problem anyway since it displays some posts, just not all. I’ll probably just go back to using a del.icio.us feed on the side.

  45. 45 Karl B. Feb 1st, 2007 at 1:39 am Quote

Look at the header file and change where it says something like and put the code for the image there. Then go into the CSS file and down to the header grouping, and there’s a header tag, I think its header title, where you have to change the padding-top from 123 to 0. Make sure the image you’re putting into the header is 180px by 730px.

When I post a comment (as admin, logged in) I encounter a ‘warning: function in array’ in wp-comments.php. When i reload the page i posted the comment in, the comment is posted as per normal. It’s a bit confusing, but I could email you a screenshot of the error message when I get it again?

xpyre: I actually encountered a similar problem a couple of times yesterday, but it doesn’t seem to be doing it today, and before yesterday I hadn’t had any problems with comments.

Can you be more specific? Looking at your blog it would appear that the modules are working?

Its not modules, I am using sidebar widgets.Which works with any k2 version it seems.Even the previous theme i was using (triple k2 theme by Johntp) doesn’t support modules. Its a K2 issue I Am sure of.

I like your theme a lot,Specially the magically appearance of the second sidebar.

I would like to suggest one thing.

1.If you can implement a better header.Where Images can be changed
2.Support of Images on top like seee on problogger.net, you can use the ad rotator plugin for that. All you have to do is ti give some place for putting logo on left and images beside that.
3.The search when made on a particular post, is messing with perm link, if made on home page its perfect.

4.Some people would like to use google search box instead. It will easy if I can see where it is.RIght now i think i might have to go into the code files, but if you can leave it on users to add this search box or not…will be a good option.

For now, Thats all i have found.Rest I will update u as soon as I feel something to.I hope It can help you in next version of This theme.

    Cheers
    Ashish

Yes, there are some know problems with the K2 sidebar modules, but to be honest I haven’t tested Redoable with sidebar widgets. I will have to do some investigation.

1.If you can implement a better header.Where Images can be changed

This will be added in a future release. There a couple of discussions in the support forums that have some suggestion as to how to modify the header to use your own images.

2.Support of Images on top like seee on problogger.net, you can use the ad rotator plugin for that. All you have to do is ti give some place for putting logo on left and images beside that.

I think I understand what you mean, I’ll look into it.

3.The search when made on a particular post, is messing with perm link, if made on home page its perfect.

Yep, it looks like it is. Thanks for pointing this out, I will definitely try to get that fixed.

You can change the search box by editing searchform.php. I will have a look at adding the google search box in a future release, it sounds like a good suggestion.

Great theme! I love it. However I have one question, on the post meta (ratings, viewcount) ect on my main page, the data is not laid out neatly like your, (www.cyfr.co.uk for an example) How can I change that so its all horizontal?

In postratings.php around line 50 you will find the the_ratings() function.

You will need to change each div to span in this function, so that it will display the post ratings inline.

    Hope that helps.

Thats great thanks, another thing.. I’ve had to remove your theme for now because when I load up in IE things like my page links dont appear (or is that because of the firefox banner?) In a perfect world everyone would use firefox but unfortunately they dont and most of the people who view my blog use it. Is there a fix for this?

    A very nice theme.
I just installed this theme and I have a couple of questions. Search with default style of permalinks (URL?p=323) doesn’t seem to work. I can’t figure it out why.
Also, I don’t know what is the problem with links from footer in Opera browsers.

    Thanks for help.

    A couple of items:

    1. For anyone looking for help changing the header image, this is a snap. In header.php, replace the reference to redoable_logo.png with your image. If you use a larger image, be sure to change the padding from 123 to a more suitable number in style.css (under #title).

(I’m not a CSS/designer/developer guy, so please excuse me if I use improper tech parlance. I try to figure this stuff out on my own, but I’m not exactly down with the jargon.)

    2. What do I need to add to style.css and header.php to add a rotating ad banner above the logo? I am trying to set up Open Ads; now I just need to figure out how to place the ads.

2a. The same question as far as ad buttons in the sidebar.

    3. Is there a catch to getting the “about text” to display on the front page?

    4. The Redoable Sidebar Modules piece doesn’t seem to work. There is nothing listed under Add Module; hitting this button does ntohing. Wouldn’t this theoretically let me add/remove certain pieces from the current sidebar?

You might have to increase the height of the header, so it can accommodate the images. Its set o 180 if i am not wrong.Try increasing it and then put the image before everything.Should work

Its not only redoable but any k2 module. Its doesn’t work with Triplek2 too.You can use sidebar widgets , i had been using it since starting.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve already figured out how to increase the header height; my issue is more about the actual placement of a banner. I’m guessing this is going to need to be something similar like the placement of the logo, but I don’t know where to go from there.

Another thing I noticed that might affect banner placement above the logo, in fact you can see it on this site as well, is that the clickable area seems to take up the width of the logo but the height of the header area. In other words, space that would be used for a banner is already clickable for the logo. I hope this makes sense…

I’ll check out the widgets plugin. Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is a know glich when its viewed in IE. I haven’t worked out why it wont show them…yet, I’m working on it, along with a million other things…lol

Its got nothing to do with the Firefox banner, the banner was put there to tell people that there browsing experience will be better with Firefox.

I just installed this theme and I have a couple of questions. Search with default style of permalinks (URL?p=323) doesn’t seem to work. I can’t figure it out why.

Thats the first time its been reported to be a problem with the standard permalinks, previously it has oly been a problem with custom permalinks.

Also, I don’t know what is the problem with links from footer in Opera browsers.

I haven’t checked Redoable in Opera, would it be possible for you to post more details in the support forum.

  68. 68 Meekuu Feb 5th, 2007 at 9:18 am Quote

The problem was with tags not with permalinks. Solved now.

In Opera there is a small problem with z-index from css. Solved that too.

Its in header.php.at the end.You can just remove whatever is under the div id=”firefox_check” and a line above and below which actually checks for IE.

You can still keep the the division as it creates a nice orange line which looks good.Check my blog.Might give a visual of what i am talking abt

What’s the best way to insert photos into the blog? I currently use Gallery2 embeded into WordPress, but it doesn’t look the best with this theme. I’m thinking of using my Flickr feed; how would I do that (I have the FlickrRSS plugin for the sidebar already working).

    Thanks.

    Hi there!
For anyone who might be interested, I found a way to place a header image that takes up the whole header space, and has no placement issues, that I can see…
I posted it in the Support Forum under the topic “Header image”.
    Hope to be helpful! :)

How can I get the sidenotes/asides to be displayed inline and only inline? I previously used Matt’s Asides plugin under another theme. Basically, I don’t want to use the side module at all. Just the main content and the standard sidebar. Thanks for the help.

This is the perfect theme I have been looking for. However I have trouble with the Extended Live Archives plugin.

I have installed the plugin and enabled the Archives Page under Redoable Options. However, there is no Archive page on my site even when it says the option has been updated.

Then when I uncheck the box to disable Archives Page, I get two lines of the same error:

WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘1′ at line 1]
    1

I have tried re-installing everything from scratch and it gives the same error. Does anyone know what is the problem here?

    Try this out:

For the archives page, my suggestion would be to go to ‘manage pages’ and delete the archives page (if its there…if not don’t worry), then (re)create the page manually and make sure to set the page template to ‘page-archives’, and don’t enter any conetent in the main text area.

This has worked for a few other who have experienced similar problems.
