Hog Legs, Whips, and Repeaters

The Wild West wouldn’t have been so wild without weapons. From the sheriff with his Peacemaker to the derringer in the card sharks’ vest, guns, and plenty of them, separated the men from the boys. In the Call of Juarez, players have them all. Whether you’re blazing a trail with your six shooters as Ray, or making human pin cushions with your bow as Billy, you’ll always find the right tool to use in the Call of Juarez. Pawel Kopinski from Techland will tell us a little more about the guns of COJ and why you might need a “Ladies Gun.” You’ll also get an exclusive look at the second chapter of the COJ graphic novel. Giddie-yup!

When we started working on “Call of Juarez”, we decided that the planned weapon types will be replicas of the real Wild West weapons and as faithful as possible. We tried to recreate their parameters and most important features as well, but we also didn’t forget that first and foremost, using them must be fun for the player.

Practically every firearm has a certain lifetime. A rusty weapon, after a few minutes of shooting, can blow up in your hand, disarming you and forcing you to search for a new gun. Quality revolvers, shotguns and rifles are much safer and more reliable, although even with them, accidents happen.

Just like in the Old West, in Call of Juarez, revolvers are the most common weapon. They differ in appearance, precision, reloading time and firepower. They are excellent for mid-distance fights. Revolvers are used by both Ray and Billy. Each of them can use two revolvers at a time or fire a revolver with one hand while throwing dynamite sticks with the other. Reverend Ray, thanks to his reflexes and precision, can use a concentration mode. By hiding his weapon and taking it back in his hand, it feels as if time has slowed down. Thanks to that, he is able to quickly and very precisely hit several targets that are far away from each other. Unlike Billy, Ray can use a revolver in another way. By holding it in one hand, he can use the other to quickly cock the hammer after each shot. Therefore, he is able to shoot all his bullets in split second, almost like a machine gun.

The revolvers that are most common in the game are the “1889 Classic Six Shooter” and “Border Gun”. Both are mediocre as far as precision and firepower. During the game, it’s worth it to look for a “Quickshooter”. This is the only revolver that allows you to load all 6 chambers of the cylinders at once, while you need to load the other ones one by one. This makes the “Quickshooter” extremely fast and efficient. Aside from the guns mentioned above, some other revolvers, often very non-typical, can be found. For example:

- The “Volcano Gun” has a bullet capacity of 8 instead of the standard 6,

- The “Hybrid Gun” has two barrels. The bottom one shoots revolver bullets, while the top one shoots rifle bullets,

- The “Ranger” has extreme precision and firepower. It was made famous during the Mexican War.

- The bullet capacity of a “Ladies’ Gun” is only 2, but it’s small and handy.

For long distance combat, the “Classic Rifle” is an excellent choice. The most popular rifle in the Wild West didn’t earn the fame of being the most efficient weapon of the time for no reason. The Classic Rifle is extremely accurate and with one shot can kill not only a man, but also a horse. The rifle is best used for long distances. The need to reload the weapon after each shot and long reloading time makes it lose to revolvers at short distance. The Classic Rifle, both in the hands of Ray and of Billy, allows you to aim at an enemy and eliminate your opponents even more efficiently.

There is also a version of Classic Rifle with a mounted scope. It can be used like a modern sniper rifle. At very long distances, no weapon can match it.

The Double-Barreled Shotgun is the deadliest weapons at short distances. Two 28-inch barrels, each of which can shoot more than a dozen shells, are certain death to anyone in the line of fire. Unfortunately, it is useless at long distances. However, it allows you to shoot from both barrels at once and kill many foes at one time.

A Sawed-off Barrel is a shortened version of the double-barreled shotgun. It is also an excellent short-distance weapon and its biggest advantage is the ability to hold it in one hand. It allows you to hold a revolver or dynamite in the other. It is, however, impossible to use both barrels of the Sawed-off at one time.

The stick of dynamite is an excellent weapon against enemies lurking behind rocks, walls or house corners. A skilled gunslinger can shoot a stick of dynamite in midair.

The Gatling Gun is a stationary machine gun that the player will find in several places during the game. Thanks to multiple barrels, it is extremely fast and does not require accuracy. Every living thing in the range of a Gatling Gun is as good as dead. The disadvantage of Gatling Gun is its absolute lack of mobility and limited rotation range of the barrels. While using a Gatling, you need to watch your back at all times.

In most missions, Billy can also use two additional weapons, unavailable to Ray. The first one is a whip, which can be used to hold on to branches and jump over precipices and rifts, and can also be used as an efficient short-distance weapon. The second one is an Indian bow. Concentrating on a shot and pulling the bow string allows Billy to precisely aim and shoot in slow-motion. When using a bow, remember that the arrows don’t go straight, but on a parabolic curve. This is why you need to aim slightly above the object you want to shoot at.

What should a player do if his only revolver breaks down and there are no other firearms around? First of all, the player can use the objects around him. You can hit the enemy with a chest, a barrel, or throw a chair at him.

In some places you can also find a tomahawk that can be used for cutting enemies into pieces or for throwing at them. Sometimes brawling will be your only option. Both characters are good at fist fighting, while Ray can also kick his opponents. However, hand to hand combat is not very efficient against armed enemies, although at a very short distance it can save you from some danger.

I hope I’ve given you a good idea of what’s at your disposal in Call of Juarez. Now enjoy the second chapter of the Call of Juarez graphic novel.

Could it be that it's a rated "M" game? If you're under 17, you shouldn't be getting this game anyway right?

Historically accurate weapons are always a plus, but why not use the real names? They did in Metal Gear Solid (remember Ocelot's Colt Single Action Army?) Or are they not real guns, just guns that were physically possible with the technology back then?
