Review: PC BioShock Outshines 360 Version
- 29 Comments
PC.IGN is sporting the first online review of the PC version of BioShock. Overall score was pretty darn high. Does the PC version play better?
If you're debating which version to get, the PC version handles better. In part it's because of the greater precision with the mouse and keyboard, but also with how the plasmids and weapons are selected. With the default settings RMB switches between the two, LMB fires, and you use the mouse wheel instead of a radial menu to select a specific plasmid or weapon. This keeps you rooted in the action to a greater degree than in the Xbox 360 version, since you don't have to keep pausing the game. By hitting Shift you can bring up a plasmid and weapon selection screen if you so desire, but the mouse wheel scrolled through fast enough to stay useful. Note that you can't set LMB to fire a weapon and RMB to fire a plasmid; there's only one fire function. We also noticed the option to bind the functions "switch and fire weapon" and "switch and fire plasmid," but when we tested it out these only switched from weapon to plasmid and back again, much like the RMB default function. All weapons and plasmids are also bound to the number and function keys, making it even easier to ensure you always have the ideal attack at the ready.
How do the graphics compare?
The PC version definitely outclasses the Xbox 360, mostly because of the ability to crank the resolution to 1920 x 1200. If you've got a Vista rig with a DX10 card, you can expect some heightened particle effects, crisper real-time shadows, and more dynamic water, but the game looks gorgeous regardless. On our gaming PC running a Core 2 Quad processor with a GeForce 8800 GTX, and 4 GB of RAM, it ran very well, with only a few occasions of seemingly random framerate hitches. We also couldn't find an option to switch between DX10 and DX9 modes, the game just seems to default to what's in your system, unlike Lost Planet.
Like there was ever any doubt!
Halo 3 is 99.9% Complete According to Bungie
- 1 Comment
The Bungie weekly update reveals that Halo 3 is 99.9% complete:
Development on Halo 3 is winding down. While there’s still a considerable amount of dudes here on site, playing through the game, testing the game, filing bugs and fixing bugs, the game is roughly 99.9% complete. That last .1% percent is pretty important, however. Right now, some testing is being done in a controlled retail environment via our Halo 3 Epsilon. You’ve probably seen reports online or even folks on your friends’ list playing it, so here’s the scoop:

The Epsilon is a closed, final phase testing for Halo 3. We won’t be making the Epsilon available for public consumption, so while that’s immensely disappointing for folks hoping that Friends and Family invites would be extended for the Epsilon, just know that each day you wait in agony is another day closer to September 25.

Valve released 3 new screenshots of Team Fortress 2, plus announced it will be at GC next week.
We'll be in Germany next week showcasing Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 at the Leipzig Games Convention, one of the biggest annual games events in the world. At the show, we'll debut the second installment in our Team Fortress 2 character movies: you've been introduced to the Heavy Weapons Guy, now get ready to meet the Soldier. We'll post the movie on Steam soon.

Age of Conan Screenshots from the Latest Build

FunCom released 3 rather lovely new screenshots taken from the latest Age of Conan build. In case you're wondering, the game will be at GC next week (as will we, or in this case, Andy).
Those who are particularly sharp-eyed may get just a hint of what we're planning to show at this year's GC, but all of you who attend are invited to come to our public area for hands-on time with the game. Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to sit in Conan's throne and take pictures with our lovely Hyborian slave girl. For players who just can't get enough information, we're also going to be doing closed-door demonstrations with major press and fansites revealing even more about the game.

We're also going to be encouraging filming by everyone—press, players, fans, everyone—as we know videos and actual gameplay footage are what everybody wants to see. There's no NDA, no restrictions will be in place, so for the first time, players can not only get their hands on the game, they can share their experiences with the world.

We know you're going to love it, so fly, drive, or swim to Germany, come to Leipzig, and finally plunge into the world of Hyboria.

Unreal Tournament 3: The Answers
Last week we put out the call for Unreal Tournament 3 questions to pass along to Epic. The response was overwhelming. Epic Games Producer Jeff Morris was kind enough to answer quite a few of them; providing some great insight into the upcoming game. Here are a couple quick tastes:
Is the demo going to be released in time to allow feedback for the retail game before it ships?

Jeff Morris - We're definitely doing a PC demo a few weeks before we sign the game off. It's very useful to get a wide range of opinions about the game prior to signing off and it's the best compatibility testing available.

How will UT3 compare to Gears of War, visually, in terms of detail? What sort of DX10 effects will UT3 support?

Jeff Morris - We like to call it Gears of War Plus graphics. We've learned the tricks to get the absolute most out of our tech, so there's just a lot more detail in UT3 than in Gears. We also are able to draw a more on screen because of the optimizations that are constantly going on.

Game Reviews - BioShock (360) Edition

Due to Toys R Us breaking the street date for BioShock the other day, 2K decided to lift the embargo on the 360 reviews a few days early. The PC reviews are still on lockdown til Monday though. Plus, review copies just arrived yesterday (or so they tell us) and its a good 20+ hour game... So yeah, Monday!

Will there be a BioShock PC demo today? Unless something is rotten in Rapture, I'd certainly expect to see one. Will it run well on your PC? Considering the rather high suggested specs that are floating around, I think some folks are in for a rude awakening. If your system is a couple years old (or older), I'd make sure to try the demo out before you buy the game. If you know you're set, then you might wanna avoid the demo and just play the full retail version and keep the experience as fresh as possible.

Today's question:

Do you plan on playing the PC demo of BioShock?

How do you think your PC will handle the game?

Introversion Software and Ambrosia Software announced today its plans for a DEFCON freeplay long-weekend in conjunction with the Penny Arcade Expo. The event will take place on Friday, August 24th at 18:00 GMT and run until Monday, August 27th at 06:00 GMT. During this time, DEFCON will be free for all to play.

To take part in the DEFCON freeplay weekend, simply head to http://www.everybody-dies.com/downloads/ and download the free trial. For this limited period, the usual demo restrictions will be lifted and gamers will not be required to provide key codes to have access to the full game.

"DEFCON is a great game and this will be a fantastic opportunity for those who haven't yet played it to have a go," said Vicky Arundel, Head of Marketing at Introversion. "We're really looking forward to welcoming some newcomers to the DEFCON community and hope that this taster will leave you wanting to come back again."

DEFCON is an online, competitive, multiplayer strategy game simulating global thermonuclear war. The game, inspired by the 1983 cult-classic film, WarGames, superbly evokes the tension, paranoia and suspicion surrounding the Cold War era. PC Gamer UK described it as 'pure, deep, utterly unconscionable fun', whilst IGN awarded DEFCON an Editors Choice Award and praised it as 'highly impressive'.

BioShock Gets Steamed; Pre-Loads Begin
Valve sends word that it is offering BioShock on Steam, which goes on sale the 21st (as in next week).
NEW YORK, NY, August 16, 2007 - Valve today announced that BioShock, the highly-anticipated and award-winning first-person shooter by 2K Games is available for pre-purchase now via Steam. Starting today, gamers can pre-order BioShock on Steam for $49.95, and begin playing the moment the game is made available.

One of the most anticipated games of 2007, BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first person shooter that lets players do things never before possible in the genre - turn everything into a weapon, biologically modify your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques.

Gamers enter the game as a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play BioShock the same way.

"Over the next six months, gamers will be hit with a barrage of highly-anticipated titles," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "The lion's share of these great new releases will be PC games. And with the gameplay and graphic innovations featured in BioShock, it promises to be one of the most important games released in 2007."

BioShock is currently scheduled to be available via Steam and at retail on August 21 in the U.S. and August 24 in Europe.

I guess this is what they ment by online activation!

Oh, and as Andy pointed out, the cost of the game if you don't pre-order is $54.95.

After going to Best Buy and seeing first hand how barren the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sections were, I decided to just get some regular dvds instead. Watching something you actually want to see is in 480p is better than crap in 1080. Wake me up when these new formats have more than an aisle of movies each.

In light of the early reviews and demo, is BioShock poised to become the best game EVAR?
