Music – If the guys from Sloan sound a bit off tonight at The Ex, the culprit may be the Tilt-a-Whirl. Or, in the case of guitarist Jay Ferguson, it's the mini doughnuts.

Music – Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova never set out to make a record together: The two had toured Europe together on and off, but that was mostly to provide a break from Hansard's long-running main band, The Frames. Then the two were approached to record a pair of songs for a film Ã;¢ââ;;¬&

Music – After kicking around the music scene in Austin, Texas for several years, Okkervil River finally made a national impression with 2005's Black Sheep Boy, a rustic folk-rock record marked by Will Sheff's sublime melodies, disturbing lyrics, and unhinged vocals. It felt like its own weird little world, which Sheff further explored on the follow-up EP,

Music – Welcome to the latest edition of Pitchfork's Guest List. Each week, we ask one of our favorite artists to fill us in on what they've been up to lately: which tracks they can't stop spinning, what books they can't put down, and what new bands they've caught on tour. This week it's Aesop Rock, who reveals which breakfast dish is sure to lure him out

Books – The first time I saw Nicki Greenberg's little characters I thought they were surely too facile to bear the weight of a tragic novel from the canon of American Literature. But more and more they've come to remind me of a type of pictorial invention that goes back centuries. The first hint was when I found myself thinking of the grotesques you find i

Music – Imagine being a singer and never being sure when you open your mouth whether you will have your voice. For years, Linda Thompson has had a vocal disorder that was first diagnosed as "hysteric dysphonia." Her vocal trouble made her stop singing completely. It took three years to complete her new CD, Versatile Heart.

Books – Fictional travelers have inspired our travels just as much as real-world travelers. To pay tribute, we've searched the corners of our English major brains to come up with the foremost fictional travelers: characters new and old whose travels are central to who they are, and whose journeys have helped shape and enlighten the world we live in. Here a

Music – If movies have taught us anything - aside from which wire to cut on a soon-to-detonate bomb - it's that the most humiliating place a band can play is an old folks' home.

Music – My exes have all asked me the same question: "Can't we just be happy for each other, be friends?" The answer: "If I've found somebody else who makes me happy, and you're miserable and beating your head against the wall that you ever let me goÃ;¢ââ;;¬Ã;Â
