Kate Nash's sudden success has probably come as much as a surprise to her fans, detractors and record company as to herself, considering she was actively pursuing a career as an actress less than a year before her first record came out. Her first-person story-songs and unusual vocal delivery seem to be just what her growing legion of followers have been waiting for, making her 2007's it-girl of the British indie music scene.

Nash seemingly came out of nowhere to top the British album chart with her debut collection, Made of Bricks, released on the Fiction label in August 2007. Her initial single release of “Caroline's A Victim” / “Birds” earlier in the year created a buzz amongst satellite and underground radio listeners, while the follow-up, “Foundations,” entered the official UK singles chart at No. 2, despite having been initially ignored by commercial radio in Britain.

Kate Nash's music has had a huge polarizing effect on British music fans in 2007, as those who rate her as a talentless poseur seem to be as numerous as those who view her as a pop music savior with a refreshingly original voice. Early support from Vogue magazine and from the New Musical Express have lent her some credibility, while fellow indie storytelling-singer Lily Allen named her the “next big thing” on her MySpace page.
