CEZ Spanish Retrocompo results out![ Comment ] 18:47 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsRetro Remakes has posted a notice that the results for the CEZ Spanish Retrocompo are now out, featuring a whole bunch of new and remade games in traditional retro style! Go check 'em out while the weekend's still young!
Their post points out all the stuff that happened the same month as the release of this true gaming landmark, though being from the UK, I'll always associate 1977 with punk and in October, at the same month that the 2600 was hitting shelves in the US, one of punk's defining albums, The Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks was shocking the UK. Truly it was a time of great cultural fertility!

Plus4emu, Version 1.2.3 released![ Comment ] 17:30 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsPlus4emu is a a Commodore 16/+4 emulator for Windows and Macintosh. It has some brilliant new features not found in many emulators, including the excellent record-to-AVI, which allows you to dump visual and audio output to a video file for playback!
CAGL is responsible for helping retro fans find their favourite machines in the local arcades of over 1000 cities, and from its humble origins as a newsgroup post to rec.games.video.arcade.collecting on October 1st 1997 has become a unique and invaluable resource for any true arcade fan! Congratulations, and here's to another 10 years!
On a related note, it's worth pointing out that Retro Remakes, a fantastic blog that serves the community well, is looking for news writers. If you think you'd be able to take the job seriously, you could hardly find a better way to give something back to the retro scene than by assisting them. If you're interested, read their advertisement now!
This game was developed by Scott Huggins, who has previously ported Astro Invader and Spectrar to the system. It's a rare and beautiful thing when a console this old gets a new game, and those of you old enough to still have your own ColecoVision will want to snap some copies up immediately!
This is a rare and exciting chance to get in the same room with the man behind what is one of the world's most popular games, even to this day! Anyone in the UK would be mad not to try and get to this one! (maybe I'll see you there!)

Retro DS Games at TGS '07[ Comment ] 17:09 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsDS Fanboy has wrapped its coverage of the Tokyo Game Show '07, and of particular interest to retro gamers will be a couple of their write ups.
The first is the retro-themed piece of meta-gaming, Game Center CX (chances of a English-language release for this are slim, however)
However, most importantly, they've also got their report on the Arkanoid and Space Invaders DS remakes. That's the Arkanoid game that comes with the Arcade-Authentic paddle attachment for the DS. You know you want it.
WinUAE 1.4.4 - Public Beta 9, RC2[ Comment ] 17:56 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsEveryone loves WinUAE, so if you've found yourself wondering how you can repay the guys who made it, why not consider giving the latest beta a try and helping out on any bugs you find?
The latest version has the following changes:
deleting file, recycle bin support enabled and deletion fails: return error code was wrong (SHFileOperation() is weird)
Action Replay 1/2/3 work again
bsdsocket froze if new configuration was loaded on the fly
filter crashes (old bug) if display was big, also centering code is back to pre-b7
You can find all these and more inside the Retrogaming Times Monthly, which has been published for
120 months in a row! If you've missed any back issues, you can browse through their archives to get up to date.

Hanabi Festival on Wii Virtual Console[ Comment ] 17:09 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsJust in case you weren't aware, all you Wii-owning retrogamers in Europe should note that it's week one of the Hanabi Festival in Japan, and to celebrate, Nintendo's bringing it to the Virtual Console! To coincide with the Hanabi fireworks festival, Nintendo are giving virtual console releases to a whole bunch of Japanese games that never made it to Europe.
Week 1 is Mario Week, so there's the original "Lost Levels" Mario game, the near-mythical Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 on the NES, and Marios Super Picross on the SNES to download. Mario 2 has a limited release (it's only available until the end of the month) so take our advice and SNAP IT UP IMMEDIATELY.
A welcome addition for any retro gamers out there. Nintendo clearly recognise that selling old games back to the same people who bought them the first time around is a nice little earner, but given how good they are at it, they could probably sell ice to eskimos!
