Should Music Be Free?

Should music be free?
With CD sales dwindling in recent years, music lovers have been downloading music for free from such file-sharing networks as Kazaa and LimeWire. And the recording industry -- execs and some musicians -- are speaking out against the prevalence of "stealing" music.

Recently, a Minneapolis woman was ordered to pay $220,000USD to six music companies for illegally downloading and sharing copyrighted music on Kazaa. This breaks down to $9,250USD for each of the 24 songs that were the focus of the case.

On the other end of the spectrum, musicians like Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Prince have been promoting file-sharing by offering their new music to fans for free.

Sleeping Alone?

Do you prefer to sleep alone?
Many men seem to be looking for that special someone to share their life with... someone to do those couple-like things with, like cuddling on the couch, walking in the park and spooning in bed until you both fall asleep.

But how's all this spooning in bed affecting your quality of sleep? A recent study published in the journal Sleep and Biological Rhythms found that men actually sleep more soundly than women when they share a bed with their partner. Women are having rougher nights mostly because men are more likely to be snorers, which is causing 23% of American couples to sleep in separate sacks.

Bruce Springsteen is under fire for being unpatriotic
Bruce Springsteen has recently come under attack for being anti-war and for using anti-war lyrics on his new upcoming album Magic. His response: "Silence is unpatriotic."

According to www.showbuzz.cbsnews.com, Springsteen explains, "I believe every citizen has a stake in the course, direction of their country. That's why we vote… It's unpatriotic at any given moment to sit back and let things pass that are damaging to some place that you love so dearly and that has given me so much."

The 58-year-old musician will address the public criticism on 60 Minutes tonight.

Is it un-American for Springsteen to criticize the U.S. government? If so, when is it OK to pass criticism? Should you have complete faith in the leaders of your country, or is it your responsibility to question their actions?

Forbid Tipping?

Should tipping be forbidden?
We’ve accepted the act of tipping in restaurants and our delivery guy, but recently, tip jars have appeared in many unexpected places -- such as the local coffee shop or the drive-thru window. Waitresses are sometimes paid less than minimum wage and delivery drivers are often not compensated for gas or maintenance on their vehicles, so tipping them has become the norm. But where on earth did the teenybopper behind the counter at Starbucks get the audacity to ask for our change? Better yet, what miracle did he perform to deserve such compensation? What’s next, tipping the librarian, the bus driver or maybe the street person?

Some say that TIPS is an acronym for “To Insure Proper Service” (despite the incorrect use of insure), which begs the question: Do you tip to get proper service, or do you tip after the service for a job well-done?

Do you tip when you go out? Are you a good tipper? How do you gauge your tips? Are you insulted by the request since you’ve paid the seller's price? Does the tip jar at the coffee shop make you feel uncomfortable?

Is The War the best war documentary ever?
The War, director Ken Burns' documentary on the role that the United States played in the second World War, has been a huge hit. More than 7 million viewers tuned in to PBS for the first episode of the miniseries, and the popular appeal has been accompanied by plenty of critical praise, with commentators applauding Burns' incisive interviews, musical scoring, and use of footage and still images.

In short, the general consensus is that The War is a great documentary. But in a genre packed with plenty of loved classics and overlooked contributions, is it the best?

Your Dream Job

Are you working in your dream job?
Remember taking those long-winded career quizzes in grade and high school? You'd answer a series of questions to find out what job would be most suited to you. For some of us, these tests alerted us to what our dream professions would be. Others of us knew already.

Whatever the case may be, very few of us actually become what we envisioned we would be professionally. Because of life circumstances, financial necessity or just plain reality, our dream jobs often become mere pipe dreams when we wake up and discover the real world.

What was (or still is) your dream job? Are you working in the field you had always hoped to? Or have you given up on the idea?

Do We Still Need Nukes?

Do we still need nukes?
2008 presidential hopeful Barack Obama brought the issue of weapons of mass destruction into the spotlight on Tuesday when he announced that, if elected, he would anchor his security policy around the global eradication of nuclear weapons. Obama’s policy move echoes a January opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal by a bipartisan group of former government officials who called for “urgent new actions” in the reduction of the world’s nuclear arsenals.

The world’s two largest nuclear powers, the U.S. and Russia, have committed to reducing their arsenals to between 1,700 and 2,200 bombs by 2012. And while many scholars have credited the existence of such nuclear arsenals as the reason for a lasting peace between world powers, others claim that, with the Cold War well behind us, these weapons have become useless doomsday devices that could be set off at any moment.

Do you believe we still need nuclear weapons? If so, should the possession of such weapons be restricted to the U.S.?

Would You Take The Pill?

Is a male birth control pill a good idea?
At a recent conference held by the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization, male contraceptives was a hot topic. From the development of "sperm blockers" to that of the "non-hormonal pill" (which hinders the efforts of sperm as they swim to their destination), it seems that the age of male birth control methods has arrived.

Would you take a male pill? Or should the responsibility for preventing pregnancy be left with women?

Worst Fall Shows?

Cavemen has the potential to be a 2007 TV flop
It's that time of year again: That time when all the major television networks bombard us with prime-time TV shows they hope will be the next Seinfield. But few shows make the cut and we are usually left to endure horrendously unfunny sitcoms and over-the-top dramas. But, which are the worst of the worst this year?

With newbies like Aliens in America, a sitcom about a young Muslim from Pakistan sent to live with a family in Wisconsin, Samantha Who? starring Jenna Elfman as a psychiatrist suffering from amnesia who has to discover her true identity, and Cavemen, an entire show based on the characters from the Geico commercials, it's a wonder people even watch television anymore. And let's not forget other potential newcomer bombs like Kid Nation, Kelsey Grammer's Back to You and Carpoolers (where the entire show takes place in a carpool ride to work each day).

Outlaw Smoking?

Smoking is a hard habit to break, but should it be banned completely?
We all know that smoking is bad for us. Studies have shown that smoking increases your risks of developing lung cancer, heart disease and the dreaded erectile dysfunction. And yet, according to the American Lung Association, approximately 21% of all adult Americans smoke -- that's nearly 45 million people!

While some U.S. restaurants and bars have banned smoking within their buildings (and most Canadian cities have banned smoking in all their restaurants and bars), it doesn't seem like smoking is about to disappear. Is the only solution to outlaw the habit?

Should smoking be made illegal everywhere? Or is it an individual right to smoke?
