Were you among the movie-going public hoping Syriana would suddenly start hemorrhaging Raw Deal? Well, then you’re definitely going to want to check out the bullet-riddled Arabia-centered thriller The Kingdom. Starring Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper and Jennifer Garner as members of an elite FBI team sent to track American-killing terrorists in Saudi Arabia, The Kingdom sprinkles enough real-world geo-political problems to make the action more pressing without making it a ripped-from-the-headlines downer. Ultimately, The Kingdom is a pretty good approximation of what a potential Bourne of Arabia flick would be like.
The most popular bad apples in the world, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, celebrate yet another fall season premiere of South Park (their 11th) this Wednesday on Comedy Central. And if recent season premieres -- such as the Michael Richards spoof “With Apologies to Jesse Jackson” and the Emmy-nominated “Make Love, Not Warcraft” -- are any indication, this one is shaping up to be another gut-busting milestone for “Fart Jokes 2.0.”
The most respected American this side of Superman, Bruce Springsteen, returns with his own Justice League, the E Street Band, on Magic. Bruce's first work with E Street in five years, Magic also finds the boss modernizing his blue-collar classic rock with help from maverick modern rock producer Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots). And although the first single, “Radio Nowhere,” downplays the reemergence of the E Street with a pounding guitar lick, one can’t deny that Bruce is firing on all cylinders.
The man who could arguably be called the Bruce Springsteen of documentary films -- Ken Burns (The Civil War) -- returned in 2007 with a jaw-droppingly thorough look at another conflict that changed the face of America: World War II. Told in typical Burns style -- with comprehensive interviews of the people actually involved -- The War is now available for home-viewing in a massive six-DVD box set. Aside from the actual documentary that viewers saw on PBS, the box set of The War also features a making-of special, commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and interview outtakes.
Let’s face it: There are too many racing games on the market -- but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some titles that are still worth investing in. Case in point: Project Gotham Racing 4. Building off the iconic car racing of the previous titles, the fourth installment of Gotham has a slew of new features, locations and classic rides. Among the highlights of these additions are races in Shanghai and St. Petersburg, a dynamic weather system and a new feature that actually allows you to build a fan base on the strength of your flair and driving style.
Given the recent successes of Frank Miller, there has never been a better time for publishing houses to put some resources behind their graphic novels; a fact clearly recognized by the folks at Fox Atomic, who have just released their latest illustrated narrative, The Nightmare Factory. Based on stories by original sh*t-disturber Thomas Ligotti, The Nightmare Factory is the product of four collaborations between some of the comic world’s most respected minds. Among the stories that arrive just in time to soil pants on All Hallows Eve is the man-eating worm tale “The Last Feast of Harlequin”; the account of a psychiatrist and a patient locked together by nightmares in “Dream of Mannikin”; a yarn about a town locked in shock from its monstrous asylum in “Doctor Locirian’s Asylum”; and the psychological mind-bender of a group of artists who have been robbed of their gifts due to horrific epiphanies in “Teatro Grotessco.”
