From Epic with Love: UT3 Hands-on
Earlier this week I flew in to Cary, North Carolina, to visit Epic Games and play a little UT3...

This is my tale:

I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of UT 2003 or 2004, but I did play an ungodly amount of Unreal Tournament in its heyday. The vibe I got out of UT3 is it’s a lot more like the original than some of its successors. Obviously, the graphics are better, but the underlying point is that this is something I can see myself playing for more than a couple weeks, which is more than I can say for the last couple games. I was a bit bummed out that there’s no assault or domination though... Assault, I think, would be a lot more popular today as players are used to more complex game types. Domination, on the other hand, is is what Team Fortress 2 boils down to, and look how hot is it online now. So, what is included?
Updated with dozens of Super Awesome screenshots! Here are a few...

Broadcast Your Conflict to the World
So my play on words is bad, deal with it! Massive Entertainment sent out a press statement regarding their new broadcasting tool for World in Conflict.
MALMO, SWEDEN (October 12, 2007) – Sierra Entertainment’s Massive Entertainment, developer of the award-winning action-strategy game World in Conflict, will release the World in Conflict Broadcast Tool this Monday, October 15. The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool is a free downloadable add-on for World in Conflict that will provide Vista- and DX10-enabled users with easy-to-use television-style broadcast options – such as pre-set and custom cameras, follow-cameras, telestration and other capabilities – that will turn any LAN game or tournament into a fun-to-watch spectator event.

The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool will also include the ability to create a film of the broadcasted match directly from the tool that can be shared with friends, clans or competition.

“World in Conflict’s multiplayer is uniquely fun to watch with its amazing graphics, tactical strategy and huge explosions, and everyone at Massive really enjoys watching great matches in the game over the shoulders of our friends or at events ,” said Martin Walfisz, founder and president, Massive Entertainment. “We wanted to make it easy for World in Conflict fans to turn this awesome experience into the best spectator game ever. Some of the team members at Massive have a background in the TV industry, so anyone who has ever seen a TV production room will recognize the set up immediately. The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool will make watching – or broadcasting -- gaming competitions exciting and fun.”

Sounds like a fantastic tool, however, it's only for Vista and DX10 users from the looks of it. Viva la XP!
Banned UK Version of Manhunt 2 is "Exactly" the Same as the M-Rated US Version
- 0 Comments
More Manhunt 2 controversy.

It's been revealed the version of Manhunt 2 that the British Board of Film Classification turned down earlier this week in the UK, is exactly the same as the revised edition that's been granted a mature rating by the ESRB in North America.

This revelation comes from UK trade magazine MCV during an interview with BBFC spokeswoman Sue Clark. She defends the board's decision saying that the organisation isn't any tougher on videogames than it is on movies. "Manhunt 2 is the second game we have rejected in 23 years. I'd hardly call that draconian," she said.

Say it ain't so, Gilbert Arenas. Say it ain't so:

Anyhow, like any good reporter, I went to Gilbert to get his response.

"Gilbert," I said, approximately, "people say you're cheating at Halo 3."

"I'm cheating?" he said. "How am I cheating?"

"Gilbert," I asked, approximately," are you creating dummy games with two fake friends and using the wins to rack up experience points?"

"Yeah," he said, laughing. "Yeah."

Sigh.

"It's a glitch," he explained. "It's a glitch in the game. I seen some kids that were like 600s, they won 600 Halo games and we only had that game for two weeks. And all the kids go to school. So I'm like, 'What the hell you all doing?' And they said that's what they doing, two-on-two."

Tsk tsk tsk...

The Unreal Tournament 3 Demo is Preloading
- 20 Comments
FilePlanet is now preloading the Unreal Tournament 3 demo, which comes in at a suprisingly slight 700-ish megs. What does it contain? If memory serves me correctly, a couple CTF maps (one with vehicles) plus a DM level as well. Full bot support is included, of course. I'm not sure what time it "unlocks"; you don't need any code or anything, but they usually release these things at around 10 AM PST.

Preload for the win.

OMG, IT'S ORANGE, MAN. F'N ORANGE! Tweakguides kicked up another one of its oh-so handy guides, this time for The Orange Box and other Source engined games.
Over two years since its original release, with the coming of HL2: Episode 2, I've completed a major revision of the Half Life 2 & Source Engine Tweak Guide. The guide is now fully up to date with the latest build of the Source Engine; I've retested and documented a range of existing and new settings, including several new advanced tweaks, and even updated all the screenshot comparisons. Give it a read through if you run any Source-based game.
Surprise BioWare, you've been Sold to EA!
Firing Squad, which happens to be located in Edmonton, got some frank off-the-record views from people at BioWare about the company being sold to EA. The poop from around the sewing circle is that no one outside of the top brass knew about the deal until after it happened. So, what now, eh?
The company line is no doubt something like “BioWare is thrilled at the opportunity to work with the world’s leading game developer. We have been looking forward to blah blah blah”. A dose of reality can be found by hanging out the BioWare offices and overhearing some honest and refreshing opinions. While this precludes me from naming names, I do live in Edmonton and if there’s one thing I know, it’s where the BioWare offices are.
Crysis Hands-on at YouGamer
From the Dinosaur Island tech demo, to state of the art PC FPS developer, Crytek is looking is change the way games are played with Crysis, or at least move a lot of new hardware so you can.

YouGamers has more:

So why all the hype? FPS games are ten-a-penny these days and there has been some pretty stiff opposition this year. The magic card that Crysis has shoved up its sleeve is graphics. Now I fully understand and appreciate the spittle-flying rants from some folk of how games have been looks over content for far too long, but for this game at least, they're a key part of what makes this an AAA title.

We played the DX9 version of Crysis, with all of the settings put to "High" (more of why they couldn't be put higher later) at 1680 x 1050, and it's astonishingly good looking. Take the process of environment destruction: enemies will often try to take cover in huts, shacks or behind ubiquitous barrels and crates. No problem; just shoot the crap out of it (or lob a grenade in there) and remove their cover. You can do it piecemeal or wholesale, but either way, the combination of shaders, particles and physics making it tumble and collapse look akin to a waif-like model, slinking up and down a catwalk, rather than a mere rendering procedure.

EA Purchases Pandemic & BioWare
Two top-tier studios died today:

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. -- the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This acquisition gives EA a strong competitive position in key genres in interactive entertainment: action, adventure and role-playing games. The two studios have been recognized for creating some of the highest-quality games in the industry.

BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios have ten franchises under development, including six wholly owned games. BioWare Corp. is currently developing the highly anticipated Mass Effect, which will be published by Microsoft in November, and is in the early development stages of a massively multiplayer online game. Pandemic Studios is redefining open-world games with its upcoming Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and Saboteur, in addition to several unannounced projects.

Pandemic Studios and BioWare Corp. employ roughly 800 people across four studios located in Edmonton, Canada; Los Angeles; Austin; and Brisbane, Australia.

"These are two of the most respected studios in the industry and I'm glad to be working with them again. They'll make a strong contribution to our strategic growth initiatives on quality, online gaming and developing new intellectual properties," said John Riccitiello, EA's Chief Executive Officer. "We also expect this will drive long-term value for our shareholders."

Pandemic Studios is led by Andrew Goldman, Josh Resnick and Greg Borrud. BioWare Corp. is jointly led by Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka. These teams will join the EA Games Label run by Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games.

"Pandemic Studios remains focused on attracting the best talent and creating blockbuster action games," said Josh Resnick, President and Co-founder of Pandemic Studios. "As a worldwide publishing leader, EA represents the ideal partner to bring our titles to market as global entertainment events."

"We are truly excited by John Riccitiello's new vision for EA," said Ray Muzyka, Co-founder and CEO of BioWare Corp. "This vision is consistent with BioWare's focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world. It will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."

EA will pay up to $620 million in cash to the stockholders of VG Holding Corp. and will issue up to an additional $155 million in equity to certain employees of VG Holding Corp., which will be subject to time-based or performance-based vesting criteria. EA will also assume outstanding VG Holding Corp. stock options. In addition, EA has agreed to lend VG Holding Corp. up to $35 million through the closing of the acquisition.

R.I.P.

World In Conflict and Company of Heroes take the top two spots in the latest U.S. PC Games Sales Chart:

1) World In Conflict
2) Company Of Heroes: Opposing Fronts
3) The Sims 2 Bon Voyage Expansion Pack
4) World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Expansion Pack
5) Bioshock
6) Medal Of Honor: Airborne
7) World Of Warcraft
8) The Sims 2 Deluxe
9) Halo 2
10) World In Conflict Collector's Edition

Fewer copies of World In Conflict were sold, but Massive's title still tipped Relic's Opposing Fronts to the top spot thanks to its higher sticker price.

Update: The Yahoo! mirror crashed two minutes after it launched. Maybe investing some money in a real server should be in Yahoo's future. And by real server, I mean one that works. Lets give them a break though, it's not like this was going to be a popular demo or anything...

Update #2: Following a major false start the demo is now available, and also mirrored at 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, Computer Games.ro, FileFront, FilePlanet, Fragland, Gamershell, GGMania and Worthplaying.

UT3 Preview at Beyond Unreal
Beyond Unreal shot up an Unreal Tournament 3 preview of its own, which includes two different views:
The Warfare gametype has changed tremendously from the sprawling mega battle that we first envisioned to something of an Onslaught/Assault inspired jack-of-all-trades. In fact, each Warfare map we played or discussed had a slightly different angle or hook to its gameplay. We started off with Necris_Torlan which is one of a few implementations of the map you’ll see in the game. This one has been utterly ravaged by the Necris process and even the famous center tower is battle-worn. We played a Z-shaped node layout that should be familiar to most those familiar with the original, though the corner tank nodes and the road nodes (East and West sides of the map) are optional and not at all connected to the others in this implementation. You can still take those optional nodes and gain the riches and spawn points associated with each, but they will not give you a path to the enemy primary node. Each primary node is now partially encased in its own mini-base structure, complete with an Energy Turret that can move on an arc-shaped rail to avoid being a stationary target.
