DC Comics
Also known as: Vertigo, WildStorm

DC Comics is one of the world's most prolific comic book publishers. Founded in 1935, DC began making waves early with the release of New Fun Comics, the first comic book comprised solely of previously unpublished material. DC essentially invented the superhero genre in 1938 with Action Comics #1, which introduced Superman to the world. Shortly thereafter, comics' other great icon, Batman, debuted in Detective Comics #27. Over the decades, DC built a stable of classic characters including The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern.

In the mid-'80s, DC once again revolutionized the comics industry. In 1986 DC published three of the most important comic books of all time: Watchmen, Superman: The Man of Steel, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. These books turned comics from kids material into adult literature.

DC publishes more than 60 comic books a month from its main line and its two imprints, Vertigo and WildStorm. The New York-based publisher recently terminated its publishing agreement with its 2000 A.D. and Humanoids imprints.
