No Hot Man-Steak Action in Mass Effect?
Sure, there's some hot alien girl-on-girl action in Mass Effect, but the same cannot be said for the opposite sex. Here's more from former Mass Effect designer Bob McCabe on the BioWare boards about it:
But for this one? Well, I can't say with authority. I left the company in June and things could have theoretically changed. But I believe that a male-male romance wasn't intended as a part of the game. Again, that's not because of politics or external pressures but, as I have tried to explain, because of this specific story and because of our scope.
Hellgate London Facing Launch Shortages?
Well poop. It looks like there's been a run on Hellgate London. If you haven't pre-ordered the game already, it looks like you might be out of luck come Halloween. More from the official website:
Wow. Believe it or not, I've just got word that the Collector's Edition of Hellgate: London is almost sold out completely. And when I say completely, I mean COMPLETELY. We will not be pressing additional copies of the CE HGL, so once they're gone, they're gone forever. Just wanted to give you guys a heads-up!

Also, if you're currently in the Beta, we have some server tests we need to run this Saturday. For you, that means that you might find the server down any time between 10:00AM Saturday, to 10:00AM Sunday. We're gonna work our hardest to get things back up and running as soon as possible, so you'll still have some good weekend time to play. Lastly, once the servers do go back up, you'll find a new, shiny build to download (required). This will NOT require a character wipe. ^_^

Stay tuned for some more DX10 Hellgate London goodness this weekend.

Thanks, Hellgate Guru.

Does my Ass. Creed Look Fat?

Jade looks to be having problems zipping up her jeans, as Assassin's Creed stuggles to fit on a 360 DVD.
Patrice Desilets, the creative director of Assassin's Creed, revealed that with the Xbox 360 version the problem is the storage medium. Desilets told Pro-G in an interview that one of the biggest challenges the team is currently facing with the Xbox 360 version of the game is fitting everything into a DVD-9 disc; something that is not a problem with the Blu-ray Disc format used by the PlayStation 3.

Age of Conan Beta Update
FunCom released a bunch of new Age of Conan screens to go along with this beta update that discusses what they have planned for server centers, plus what's up with the open beta.
At the same time we are now deploying a large amount of additional machines to our main server structures. This means that we are getting ready for larger-scale Beta deployment! We now have the hardware, the set-up (and an awesome game;) ready for larger scale testing! As a result of this we are also getting ready to start inviting thousands and thousands (and thousands) into our Beta programs. As we progress with this new stage of the Beta we expect to get lots of constructive feedback on the general gameplay, and we hope that the testers will also love this iteration of the new combat system. This testing will in turn lead to adding tens and tens of thousands of testers as we move over to the new year. This is surely great news, and for you in the community it means that we are escalating our invitation process. For those of you we have defined as “veterans” (which have not gotten a Beta invite yet), we are looking to send an invitation within the next few weeks. As we have stated before it is a goal for us to give you, our loyal followers, Beta advantage as we move into larger scale testing, but we can’t promise everyone access. It is still a matter of focused testing, not “open beta”.

As a part of this we would like to state that it is not a goal to move beyond several thousands of Beta testers at the stage we are now moving into. The needs of the game and our development team will, and must have, first priority. This means that we are not looking into any form of “open” Beta activities before next year. The Beta for Age of Conan will almost all the way up to launch be defined by development needs, but we have also planned a few surprises along the way ;)

Here's what was hot on Xbox Live last week according to Major Nelson.

The Super Awesomeness Analyzed
The Unofficial Hellgate London website posted an indepth analysis of our Super Awesome Hellgate London co-op video which showed off 10-minutes of gameplay from the Alpha version of the game.
This clip is recorded in Whitehall, one of the later areas of Act II, and the tileset is "Dank Sewers". Apache seems to be wielding a Zeus Rifle (very good at single targets), and Andy an Arclight Thermite Rifle (bit more of a "splash" effect, although being direct fire damage, a favourite of mine because of its sound). The first room of the movie is one of the standard starting rooms for the "Dank Sewers" tileset from looking at other videos, and as far as we know, monsters do not spawn in here (although they are more than willing to follow you there if you run!).
And that, my friends, is what makes it super awesome.
Unreal Tournament 3 HotFix Patch
A number of users using Windows XP 64 and Windows Server 2003 were unable to install the Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo. The Epic Forums now has a fix for you (Thanks Blue's News).
We created a fix for the game not starting up on Windows XP 64 and Windows Server 2003 systems. This patch has not undergone the same amount of QA as the released demo so I strongly encourage to ONLY replace the UT3Demo.exe with the one from the patch if you are experiencing the "Modified executable code is not allowed" issue at startup.

Hopefully this will get everyone up and running.

The weekends are always pretty slow with gaming news. I've been passing the dead time playing Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament, and The Orange Box. There are so many demos out at the moment, you can go crazy trying to find time to play them all.

Today's question:

Do you plan on buying the full retail versions of Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament III?

From Epic with Love: UT3 Hands-on
Earlier this week I flew in to Cary, North Carolina, to visit Epic Games and play a little UT3...

This is my tale:

I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of UT 2003 or 2004, but I did play an ungodly amount of Unreal Tournament in its heyday. The vibe I got out of UT3 is it’s a lot more like the original than some of its successors. Obviously, the graphics are better, but the underlying point is that this is something I can see myself playing for more than a couple weeks, which is more than I can say for the last couple games. I was a bit bummed out that there’s no assault or domination though... Assault, I think, would be a lot more popular today as players are used to more complex game types. Domination, on the other hand, is is what Team Fortress 2 boils down to, and look how hot is it online now. So, what is included?
Find out!

Broadcast Your Conflict to the World
So my play on words is bad, deal with it! Massive Entertainment sent out a press statement regarding their new broadcasting tool for World in Conflict.
MALMO, SWEDEN (October 12, 2007) – Sierra Entertainment’s Massive Entertainment, developer of the award-winning action-strategy game World in Conflict, will release the World in Conflict Broadcast Tool this Monday, October 15. The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool is a free downloadable add-on for World in Conflict that will provide Vista- and DX10-enabled users with easy-to-use television-style broadcast options – such as pre-set and custom cameras, follow-cameras, telestration and other capabilities – that will turn any LAN game or tournament into a fun-to-watch spectator event.

The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool will also include the ability to create a film of the broadcasted match directly from the tool that can be shared with friends, clans or competition.

“World in Conflict’s multiplayer is uniquely fun to watch with its amazing graphics, tactical strategy and huge explosions, and everyone at Massive really enjoys watching great matches in the game over the shoulders of our friends or at events ,” said Martin Walfisz, founder and president, Massive Entertainment. “We wanted to make it easy for World in Conflict fans to turn this awesome experience into the best spectator game ever. Some of the team members at Massive have a background in the TV industry, so anyone who has ever seen a TV production room will recognize the set up immediately. The World in Conflict Broadcast Tool will make watching – or broadcasting -- gaming competitions exciting and fun.”

Sounds like a fantastic tool, however, it's only for Vista and DX10 users from the looks of it. Viva la XP!
Banned UK Version of Manhunt 2 is "Exactly" the Same as the M-Rated US Version
- 1 Comment
More Manhunt 2 controversy.

It's been revealed the version of Manhunt 2 that the British Board of Film Classification turned down earlier this week in the UK, is exactly the same as the revised edition that's been granted a mature rating by the ESRB in North America.

This revelation comes from UK trade magazine MCV during an interview with BBFC spokeswoman Sue Clark. She defends the board's decision saying that the organisation isn't any tougher on videogames than it is on movies. "Manhunt 2 is the second game we have rejected in 23 years. I'd hardly call that draconian," she said.

Basketball Star Cheats in Halo 3 Multiplayer

Say it ain't so, Gilbert Arenas. Say it ain't so:

Anyhow, like any good reporter, I went to Gilbert to get his response.

"Gilbert," I said, approximately, "people say you're cheating at Halo 3."

"I'm cheating?" he said. "How am I cheating?"

"Gilbert," I asked, approximately," are you creating dummy games with two fake friends and using the wins to rack up experience points?"

"Yeah," he said, laughing. "Yeah."

Sigh.

"It's a glitch," he explained. "It's a glitch in the game. I seen some kids that were like 600s, they won 600 Halo games and we only had that game for two weeks. And all the kids go to school. So I'm like, 'What the hell you all doing?' And they said that's what they doing, two-on-two."

Tsk tsk tsk...

The Unreal Tournament 3 Demo is Preloading
- 20 Comments
FilePlanet is now preloading the Unreal Tournament 3 demo, which comes in at a suprisingly slight 700-ish megs. What does it contain? If memory serves me correctly, a couple CTF maps (one with vehicles) plus a DM level as well. Full bot support is included, of course. I'm not sure what time it "unlocks"; you don't need any code or anything, but they usually release these things at around 10 AM PST.

Preload for the win.

Tweaking Out on Orange Boxes
OMG, IT'S ORANGE, MAN. F'N ORANGE! Tweakguides kicked up another one of its oh-so handy guides, this time for The Orange Box and other Source engined games.
Over two years since its original release, with the coming of HL2: Episode 2, I've completed a major revision of the Half Life 2 & Source Engine Tweak Guide. The guide is now fully up to date with the latest build of the Source Engine; I've retested and documented a range of existing and new settings, including several new advanced tweaks, and even updated all the screenshot comparisons. Give it a read through if you run any Source-based game.
Surprise BioWare, you've been Sold to EA!
Firing Squad, which happens to be located in Edmonton, got some frank off-the-record views from people at BioWare about the company being sold to EA. The poop from around the sewing circle is that no one outside of the top brass knew about the deal until after it happened. So, what now, eh?
The company line is no doubt something like “BioWare is thrilled at the opportunity to work with the world’s leading game developer. We have been looking forward to blah blah blah”. A dose of reality can be found by hanging out the BioWare offices and overhearing some honest and refreshing opinions. While this precludes me from naming names, I do live in Edmonton and if there’s one thing I know, it’s where the BioWare offices are.
Crysis Hands-on at YouGamer
From the Dinosaur Island tech demo, to state of the art PC FPS developer, Crytek is looking is change the way games are played with Crysis, or at least move a lot of new hardware so you can.

YouGamers has more:

So why all the hype? FPS games are ten-a-penny these days and there has been some pretty stiff opposition this year. The magic card that Crysis has shoved up its sleeve is graphics. Now I fully understand and appreciate the spittle-flying rants from some folk of how games have been looks over content for far too long, but for this game at least, they're a key part of what makes this an AAA title.

We played the DX9 version of Crysis, with all of the settings put to "High" (more of why they couldn't be put higher later) at 1680 x 1050, and it's astonishingly good looking. Take the process of environment destruction: enemies will often try to take cover in huts, shacks or behind ubiquitous barrels and crates. No problem; just shoot the crap out of it (or lob a grenade in there) and remove their cover. You can do it piecemeal or wholesale, but either way, the combination of shaders, particles and physics making it tumble and collapse look akin to a waif-like model, slinking up and down a catwalk, rather than a mere rendering procedure.
