The University of Oklahoma Legal Clinic is a clinical program providing law students the opportunity to represent indigent clients in a broad range of cases in Cleveland and McClain Counties and in administrative proceedings before state and federal agencies. The Legal Clinic includes both a Civil Clinic and a Criminal Defense Clinic. Students participating in the program are licensed pursuant to the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship (pdf, opens in a new window). Thus, the students are eligible to handle every aspect of the case under the direct supervision of one of the Clinic's experienced lawyers. A student earns three credit hours each semester for participating in a Clinic. During the first semester of enrollment, students must also enroll in the two credit hour classroom component. Students are encouraged to participate in a Clinic for two semesters to maximize the educational value of their clinical experience.

A student is eligible for the Clinic upon the successful completion of 45 credit hours with a graduating GPA, including Evidence, Civil Procedure and Professional Responsibility. Students must also be registered with the Oklahoma Board of Bar Examiners as a law student or with another state bar whose standards for admission are at least as high as those for Oklahoma. (See Rule 2.1{d}, Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship. pdf, opens in a new window) See also requirements for a Limited License.

Clinical Legal Education

The College of Law provides opportunities for students to learn the skills and values essential to good legal practice through the clinical courses and extern placements that constitute our Clinical Legal Education Program:

In each course, students function as both participants and observers in order to obtain an insider's perspective of the operations of the legal system. This perspective not only improves their understanding of the workings of the legal system, it teaches them about the role of the lawyer within that system. We encourage students to become self-directed learners and reflective practitioners.
