Legal Intern Requirements

45 Hours, Course and GPA Requirements

A student must have completed 45 hours of Law School work with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or better and must have completed the following courses: Evidence, Civil Procedure, and Professional Responsibility before being sworn in as a Legal Intern. A student will be allowed to take the Licensed Legal Intern Exam during the semester he or she is completing these requirements.

Registration Requirement

A student must be registered as a law student with the Board of Bar Examiners. If you are registered as a law student in another state, you may not have to register in Oklahoma. If you plan to register NUNC PRO TUNC please be warned that it could take 4-6 months to get final approval from the Board of Bar Examiners.

Application Requirement

A student must submit an Application for a Limited License with $50.00 non-refundable fee to the OBA one week prior to taking the Legal Intern Examination. Examination Requirement

a) All students will sit for Section A which covers the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship (pdf, opens in a new window). This is a one-hour, timed exam consisting of 50 true/false questions.

b) If you have not yet taken or did not obtain the minimum passing score for Oklahoma on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (opens in new window, offsite link), you will also sit for Section B which covers the Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct (Title 5, chapter 1, Appendix 3-A). This is a one-hour, timed exam consisting of 50 true/false questions. *You will have a total of two hours to complete both Sections A and B.

Supervising Attorney Requirement

A student must submit a supervising attorney application (Form 2) for approval to the OBA. A student cannot be sworn in as a Legal Intern until a supervising attorney is obtained and approved.

Enrollment Requirement

A student must be enrolled in one of the following courses before he or she can be sworn in as a Legal Intern, and must either continue to be enrolled each semester in the O.U. Legal Clinic or be registered in the Legal Internship Program * *(see below) in order for their Legal Intern License to remain "active" .

  1. Civil Clinic/Legal Aid Clinic (Law 6363) - 3 hours of credit - A student works l0-12 hours per week in the Clinic office at the Law Center and handles various civil cases from an initial interview through trial. Enrollment in the Litigation Skills Class (Law 6400 - 2 hours) is required the initial semester of enrollment in the Civil Clinic. A required orientation meeting is scheduled during the first week of classes.
  2. Criminal Defense Clinic (Law 6323) - 3 hours of credit - A student works 10-12 hours per week in the Clinic office at the Law Center and handles various criminal and municipal cases from an initial interview stage through trial. Enrollment in the Litigation Skills Class (Law 6400 -2 hours) is required the initial semester of enrollment in the Criminal Defense Clinic. A required orientation meeting is scheduled during the first week of classes.

* *Legal Internship Program

All students who are working as Licensed Legal Interns must be registered in the Legal Internship Program. Students register in the Legal Internship Program in Lori Ketner's Office (Room 2020) during the first two weeks of each semester. A student must register each semester to maintain an "active" Intern License. (Students who are enrolled in the O.U. Legal Clinic are not required to be registered in the Legal INternship Program.)

The first semester that you use your legal intern license you MUST enroll in Issues in Professionalism. You should enroll in the section (criminal or civil) that best reflects you placement. (6400) If you begin using your legal intern license dureing a Summer semester you must enroll in "Issues" the next fall semester. Students using their intern license in connection with one of the live client clinics nees not take "Issues". However, Clinic students are required to take "Litigation Skills" (Law 6400 § 604) during the first emester of enrollment in either live-client Clinic.

Section A Legal Intern Examinations

A student is eligible to take the Section A Legal Intern Examination consisting of 50 true/false questions (1 hour) if he or she has proof of passing the MPRE. A student must attach a copy of his/her MPRE score to the Legal Intern Application (Form No. 1) copy given to Lori Ketner, Room 2020. The Section A of the Legal Intern Examination will cover Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship (pdf, opens in a new window)

Section B Legal Intern Examination

If a student does not have proof of having passed the MPRE, he or she must also take the Section B of the Legal Intern Examination (1 hour), which will include:

  1. Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct, (5 O.S. Ch. 1, App. 3-A, effective January 1, 2008, as amended)

The Legal Intern Examination will not take the place of the MPRE, and the MPRE will not take the place of the Legal Intern Examination. A student will be sworn in as a Legal Intern when all requirements for a limited license have been met. The ceremony is scheduled by the OBA and is held at the Supreme Court. A Legal Intern must notify the OBA immediately of any change in status in his/her supervising attorney and/or to notify the OBA to inactivate his/her license due to unemployment as a Legal Intern.
