The Legal Externship Program offers law students the opportunity to work under the direct supervision of a local attorney in a private office, or in the public sector, such as a district attorney's office, public defender office, or a state agency. Students participating in the program are licensed pursuant to the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship (pdf, opens in a new window). In addition to learning from observing their supervising attorneys, students use the Limited License to perform legal tasks under the direction of their supervising attorney. Students are encouraged to discuss their legal experiences with their supervising attorneys and to think critically about the legal system as they observe that system function.
Students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week in their placements. Legal Externs are required to register with the Clinical Legal Education Assistant and to report monthly on their "in court experience" hours spent observing or participating in legal tasks. Students arrange their own placements and are paid by the firm or agency employing them. No academic credit is received for working in the placement.
