Getting Started With The IndieWeb

What is the IndieWeb?

  • A people-focused alternative to the “corporate web.”
  • A place where you own and control your content.
  • A home base from which you can syndicate and share with people on other websites, including social media.

How can I participate in the IndieWeb?

  • Get your own domain name. This will be your location on the web. Think of it as a cell phone number that you can take with you and at which people can always reach you, regardless of your location or the phone company that you use.
  • Find a web hosting service that supports IndieWeb features. Micro.blog is one of those.
  • **Point your domain name at the web server where your site is hosted.
  • Write a post and publish it. Take a photo and publish it. Don’t wait until you have something polished, significant, or perfect. You will learn by actually posting to your blog. Because you control your website, you can make improvements later or even delete your early posts.
  • Connect with the IndieWeb community. Attend an IndieWeb event (https://events.indieweb.org) where you can meet other people working on websites that follow IndieWeb principles. Join the IndieWeb chat (https://chat.indieweb.org/). The IndieWeb is a people-focused alternative to the corporate web!
