meyerhord.biomechanics Theatre UAF: Mamet'07 Bentley: When I wrote The Playwright as Thinker, which was my "beginning" 40 years ago, at the end of the book I had an essay which probably looks hopelessly naive now. It provided two models, one for the broader theater and the larger audience, a popular theater but not on the usual commercial basis. The second model was the small art theater for the avant-garde. So it could be said that I wanted to abolish capitalism and with it the Broadway theater! There was no television then, or none to speak of, and I suggested a big democratic peoples' theater and a small art theater. Of course we have the second to some degree -regional theaters and college theaters. The regional theaters are sometimes ahead of New York now. * A person experiencing schizophrenia may demonstrate symptoms such as disorganized thinking, auditory hallucinations, and delusions. In severe cases, the person may be largely mute, remain motionless in bizarre postures, or exhibit purposeless agitation; these are signs of catatonia.
... Living in an urban environment has been consistently found to be a risk factor for schizophrenia.

Virtual Theatre w/AnatolyBentley: Whatever that is. I object to the word. "Modern" to me means of the present, so postmodern would be in the future. There is no postmodern art as yet if you are as fussy as I am about words. However, yes, we did have a movement which seems now to have ended. The last generation in this movement was the generation of Genet, Brecht, and Jean-Paul Sartre. It's the movement that began with Ibsen and Shaw, the great men of the turn of the century, and was renewed in the 1920s and '30s. You can't go on renewing a movement forever. There was a time when the Romantic movement was over. People began to be non-Romantic, anti-Romantic, etc. I just hope we get a better word than postmodern, which is confusing. Besides, there is no clearly new movement today and there are no geniuses -- maybe there are, but we haven't found them. Geniuses emerge as such later. So I have two objections to postmodernism: first, the use of the term and second, well, there are no great writers to replace the modernists.
DiGaetani: Do you feel there are no great playwrights these days?
Bentley: Samuel Beckett is a great writer, and he belongs very strongly to modernism, but he is dead now. Maybe I'm touching more on something that characterizes modernism in general. It was extremely negative in its philosophy. A recurrent, relentless negativism confronts us, and when people argue about Beckett they are not arguing about his style. The argument is always between one person who says "he's so pessimistic, he's so bleak" and another person who says "but not really, you know." The same conversation was taking place about Henrik Ibsen one hundred years ago. Have I said something now about the essence of modernism? [Digaetani 30]

... For T-BLOG: making up a role of spectator (Brechtian devise), although not fully developed and used, mini-insert (Marco-Polo) was done to compensate the "play for reading" sense of the "script" (not really a play). "Thealicality" = to save pomo "dramatic material" from being "literary theatre"...
