Exploration of ethical themes in a Platonic mode, with a view towards dimensionism.
Ethical Explorations: Moral Dilemmas in Universe of Possibilities, 2023
In this chapter, you'll begin your journey into the realm of ethical thought, setting off from a metaphorical origin that has shaped Western philosophy for centuries: Plato's Cave. This iconic allegory serves as a launchpad to delve into ethical complexities and different perspectives on morality and human behavior. First, you will examine three distinct variations of the cave story. Each of these variations not only explores different facets of the human condition but also challenges your preconceived notions about what is real, what is illusion, and how these perceptions influence our actions and decisions. You'll engage with thought-provoking questions accompanying each variation to spur critical thinking and encourage deeper introspection. Following these variations, you'll dive into the 'Big Ideas' section, starting with a closer look at Plato's Cave itself. This profound allegory opens doors to metaphysical and epistemological considerations which, in turn, form a strong foundation for our exploration of ethics. Subsequently, the concept of ethics will be unpacked in greater detail. You will grapple with intriguing questions about moral values, societal norms, and the intricate relationship between ethics and human nature. To further deepen your understanding, we'll delve into the realm of metaethics, investigating how these grand theories of good and evil hold up within the confines of the cave. This will help illuminate the complexities of ethical thinking and its practical implications. We will then bring your attention to the challenge to ethics posed by the theory of “egoism”, as seen through the lens of another of Plato's allegories - the Ring of Gyges. This tale provides a rich context for discussing self-interest, power, and moral responsibility, setting the stage for the ethical explorations that lie ahead. Finally, you will find a set of discussion questions designed to further stimulate critical thinking and promote thoughtful discourse. A glossary at the end of the chapter will serve as a helpful reference point to clarify any unfamiliar terms and concepts. This chapter is not merely an introduction to the subject of ethics, but a thought-provoking journey that will challenge you to question, analyze, and understand the moral landscape of human existence. As we venture together from the darkness of Plato's Cave towards the light of ethical knowledge, remember: philosophy, in essence, is not just about finding answers, but about learning to ask the right questions.

This article vindicates the notion of Platonic forms within Mocombe's theory of phenomenological structuralism (PS). Mocombe uses his consciousness field theory to ground Plato's notions of forms as scientific fact. Mocombe posits that the human mind or consciousness is presented with brute facts and things of the multiverse, which it attempts to reify and universalize through concepts of language and mathematics. So, the facts and things of the world exists, via what Mocombe calls the absolute vacuum, where they exist as Platonic forms, irrespective of the human mind, which simply highlights and categorizes them in order to experience being-in-the-world with others and things they encounter.

Recently, there has been a move in contemporary epistemological philosophy toward a virtue epistemology, which sees certain character traits of the rational agent as critical in the acquisition of knowledge. This attempt to introduce virtue into epistemological investigations has, however, relied almost exclusively on an Aristotelian account of virtue. In this paper, I attempt to take a new tack and examine a virtue epistemological account grounded in Platonic thought. Taking seriously the distinction between knowledge and opinion found in The Republic, I then draw upon two virtues, humility and, what I call, sincerity, to flesh out this account

I begin by describing certain central features of a prominent Anglophone approach to Platonic virtue over the last few decades. I then present an alternative way of thinking about virtue in Plato that shifts central concern away from moral psychology and questions about virtue's relationship to happiness. The approach I defend focuses on virtue, both as a supreme aim of a person's actions and as something whose nature needs to be determined.

Let me begin with a bit of autobiography. I am, by profession, a teacher of philosophy. Year in and year out, for the last fifteen or twenty years, I have taught a large undergraduate course on contemporary moral issues issues like abortion, euthanasia, reverse discrimination, genetic engineering, and animal rights. Over the years, I have written a handful of papers on some of these topics. However, most of my research and writing has been in a very different domain. It has been concerned with problems in the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of psychology. During the last decade, much of my work has been on the philosophical foundations of cognitive science, and I have spent a great deal of time thinking and writing about the nature of mental representation.
