Interview Brazil Julia Garcia Vilaça de Souza

What follows now is the script of our interviews carried out in Brazil, seeking to gather experiences, impressions and opinions about Sinology in Brazil and its participation in this field. This structure was adapted from the oral interview script-a modality that unfortunately we could not perform at that time for health and logistical reasons, among other reasons. We seek an overview of the personal and educational trajectory; next, what led to the study of China, and from what aspect; finally, some of the academic and personal opinions about Sinology in Brazil and its future. It was not necessary to answer all the questions, but if possible, to form a scenario of the personal trajectory, academic performance and vision of Sinology. We allow for less formal language, telling personal stories and expressing opinions. There was no set size for each answer, you could use as much space as you want. André Bueno Prof. adj. Eastern History UERJ/Brazil Coord. Project Orientalism INTERVIEW Full name and birthday Julia Garcia Vilaça de Souza, 08/21/1983 Family history details (including family history, spouse and family of spouse, siblings and children). Only child, divorced parents, single Details of school experiences (from preschool to graduate school).

I studied in preschool, elementary school and high school in educational institutions at the University of São Paulo (Nursery for employees of Usp and School of Application of FEUSP). I did two degrees: International Relations, at Faculdade Santa Marcelina; Letters, with Qualification in Chinese Language from FFLCH-USP. Supplementary course at Xiamen University, Fujian, China. Master in Philosophy from USP (Supervised by Professor João Vergílio Galerani Cuter). Doctorate (in progress) in Social Sciences from Unicamp (Supervised by Professor Antônio Florentino Neto). The beginning of the study of China. I started studying China in the second year of my second degree, at the Faculty of Arts. The curricula, the faculty, the institution and the advisor during postgraduate training. Answered above. 台 灣 大 學 政 治 學 系 中 國 大 陸 暨 兩 岸 關 係 教 學 與 研 究 中 心 The choice of research subjects, especially those related to China. I don't know if I understand what I should answer here. In any case, my first research focus, during my master's degree, was Zhuangzi, because I considered that his thinking was similar to that of Foucault - a scholar I studied during my International Relations undergraduate course and also because part of Zhuangzi's writings could be connected to the ideas of Wittgenstein, a scholar researched by my master's supervisor, in the area of Philosophy of Language. Intellectual growth after graduation. From the master's on, I was able to expand my knowledge to understand the world from new perspectives: the Chinese perspectives. I consider, with that, to have expanded my intellectual scope and to be able, nowadays, to think about the world issues based on different points of view. Professional societies, associations, research staff and so on. I was part of the GAPCon (Group for the Analysis and Prevention of International Conflicts during graduation; during the master's degree, I became part of the CALF (Ancient China: Literature and Philosophy), at USP; currently I am also part of the Research Group on Brazil Relations China, at Unicamp; and Roda de Conversa (a group with no institutional connection that aims to discuss issues connected to China). Events or experiences that affect research in China nationally and individually. Congresses: Research China Contemporary Seminar; Colloquium of Oriental Philosophy; Journey of Oriental Philosophy; ALAFI Intercultural Philosophy Congress. Reflections on textbooks or teaching materials about China. The achievements in the West tend to have a Eurocentric bias that places China as absences. The development and evolution of China's own research agenda. I think that, because it was not common when I started to study China, and because there was not a diversity of clearer jobs that embrace the topic, my research agenda on the topic was not very strategic, at first. Now, maybe I'm managing to strategically direct my studies. Reflections on the methodology of China studies. About this, I think there is a similarity with what I answered in the previous space. In addition, as the academic area in Brazil has always been westernized, we tend to use western methodologies for studies on China and I see that, many times, researchers are not careful to notice this and try to create ways of thinking about China based on their own premises. chinese. But I also think that this is something that is changing and, perhaps, in the future, there will be more targeted methodologies for studies on China. The source of research funding over time. 台 灣 大 學 政 治 學 系 中 國 大 陸 暨 兩 岸 關 係 教 學 與 研 究 中 心 Here in Brazil, I think that research funding sources – and many things related to the topic, such as retirement – are extremely restricted, since research work is not understood as work, effectively. But during my doctorate, I had access to funding from CNPq. In the master's degree, however, I had to organize myself in other ways to materially support myself. Engagement in debates about China, both theoretical and practical. My participation in formal and informal research groups are ways of getting involved in debates about China. Engagement in policy, consultation or risk analysis in the public and private sectors. I am not yet involved in policy, consultation or risk analysis. Involvement in transnational research projects on China. I am not yet involved in transnational research projects on China, although I am very interested in doing so. Relations with academics, practitioners, government and other connections from China. My relations with academics are still restricted, but I have connections with professors who study Chinese philosophy. Reflections on the influence of the church institutionally and academically in China studies. I understand that the influence of the church on studies on China is part of the process of colonization of other peoples by the West, due to its racist and salvationist perspective. Frequency of visits to China and recall of trips to China. I lived in China for a year and returned two years ago to participate in an event on the silk road. Publishing experiences. For now, my publications have to do with my master's thesis. Self-perceived contribution to views and theories about China. I believe that I am contributing to the expansion of studies on China in Brazil and so that any question can be thought of from non-Western categories, such as Chinese concepts. Evaluation of China studies in Brazil/Latin America and its future perspectives. I believe that studies on China are expanding in Brazil. When I started, there were very few researchers who studied the subject. Currently, there are a much larger number of people dedicating themselves to these studies. I imagine this should increase even more. Visions on China's future. 台 灣 大 學 政 治 學 系 中 國 大 陸 暨 兩 岸 關 係 教 學 與 研 究 中 心 China is already a very present country both in Brazil and on the world stage. I believe that this presence should strengthen in the coming years.
