Purchase options and add-ons
Aaron Slater, Illustrator is an uplifting story about the power of art, finding your voice, and telling your story even when you’re out of step with your peers, from Andrea Beaty and David Roberts, the #1 bestselling creators of Sofia Valdez, Future Prez and Ada Twist, Scientist!
An instant #1 New York Times bestseller!
An instant USA Today bestseller!
Aaron Slater loves listening to stories and dreams of one day writing them himself. But when it comes to reading, the letters just look like squiggles to him, and it soon becomes clear he struggles more than his peers. When his teacher asks each child in the class to write a story, Aaron can’t get a single word down. He is sure his dream of being a storyteller is out of reach . . . until inspiration strikes, and Aaron finds a way to spin a tale in a way that is uniquely his.
Printed with a dyslexia-friendly font, Aaron Slater, Illustrator tells the empowering story of a boy with dyslexia who discovers that his learning disability may inform who he is, but it does not define who he is, and that there are many ways to be a gifted communicator.

Review
"In the illustration, a tableau of colorful mythological beings embodies Aaron’s tale. . .Empathetic art and lyrical text blend for a touching and empowering tale." ―Kirkus Reviews
"Celebrating differences is an ever-worthy theme. Even better, an endnote states that the rhymed narrative is printed in a dyslexic-friendly font." ―Booklist

The characters in Andrea's humorous picture books and novels are smart, funny, and unapologetic in their passion. They are doers. Curiosity, creativity, innovation and persistence are recurring themes in her work.
From architecture-obsessed IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT to the inventive ROSIE REVERE, ENGINEER to the irrepressible magician in training, Robbie Darko (DORKO THE MAGNIFICENT). And then there is the fiercely funny Ted (DOCTOR TED, FIREFIGHTER TED, ARTIST TED) who can't be stopped when he puts his mind to something.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2022We adore every book in this series and read them often, but this is far and away the best of the bunch. So often the popularity of a series reduces subsequent content to mush. Not here. Solid story, equal illustrations, and a message that applies so well for my family and children. The fact that the author changed her type face to help dyslexic readers was amazing and allowed us to have a healthy conversation as a family about accommodations. A+ job once again.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2024We love all the books in this series, but there is something about this one that is extra special. Every time I read it to our daughters, I cry! Its cadence is lovely and its message so poignant. Truly a beautiful book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024Was recommended this book by my daughter. Purchased it and read it myself first, and cried! What a wonderful story! I am very grateful there are books out there that celebrate students of all kinds! Read it countless times to my grandchildren. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021Seriously great book. The prose is beautiful and the illustrations are even better. I love that the text is in a dyslexic-friendly font. Great message celebrating both Aaron Slater's talents and strengths and the hard work Aaron Slater put in to learn how to read. We received it two days ago and we've read it 5 times.
Served as an excellent jumping off point for a discussion on learning differences. You might find it helpful to have some more material showing how text can look different to a person with dyslexia, we had a lot of curiosity about that.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2021My 6 yr old granddaughter loves these books. We’ve been accumulating them as they’ve been published and every single one is a gem. This particular one is about Aaron, a brown skinned boy who is an incredible artist but who also has a challenging time reading. The story is beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse. The font used is is especially designed to facilitate fluid reading. It is such a positive story about Aaron and all of his abilities you can’t help but smile.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2022I am a mom and elementary teacher and love this whole series but this may be my new favorite. As someone who teaches students who struggle with reading but have so many other strengths I love the message of this book. It immediately reminded me of one amazing student from a few years ago and I plan to give him a copy. This is a great book for any home library or classroom that is fun to read, has lovely illustrations, and a powerful message for kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021I rarely preorder books, but we have loved all the other books in this series so much, that I knew we’d want this one in our library, too. And it did not disappoint! It was such a great book to read with my little one as he is just starting to learn to read & write. He connected with the story immediately & really got the message in an age appropriate way. What a beautiful gift of a story for kids who have all different gifts & abilities!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021We were beyond excited to find out they were releasing another book. I pre-ordered it and had planned on giving it to the kids for Christmas, but I was just as excited as they were, and we didn't wait!
The story is a little different than the others in the series - and focuses on a boy with dyslexia. Both my 4 1/2 and 7 year old loved it, and we have read it every night since it arrived.
I will also be ordering additional copies for my children's teachers (to add to their classroom libraries), and to give as birthday gifts. This book, paired with a fun art set, would make a phenomenal gift for a child between the ages of 3-7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story and (fittingly) phenomenal illustrations
This might be the best of the Questioneers books. My <1 year old baby loved the pictures, and the story is just so sweet. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
My little boy (7) has really been struggling to get to grips with reading and writing despite being very bright. We suspect he has dyspraxia and adhd. This story could have been written for him especially. To hear him say “it’s just like me!” was an utter joy. Beyond that it’s a really great read which uses ambitious vocabulary which both he and I appreciate. It makes the assumption that the reader is smart enough to comprehend interesting words whether they are able to read them themselves or not. The language feels painterly which ties in beautifully with the theme of the book. Parents, be prepared to have a little cry then catch your child drawing under the covers after lights out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, kids like it a lot
It's a great book about a kid who struggles to read (dyslexia). An important topic handled really well by the author. However, I liked the verses in Iggy Peck better, somehow the flow of the book was better in Rosie too. Perhaps it's just me and what kind of rhymes I like but Iggy and Rosie get five stars, Aaron and other books in the series get four.
