The Khazars: A Judeo-Turkish Empire on the Steppes, 7th–11th Centuries AD (Men-at-Arms) Paperback – January 22, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Fully illustrated with detailed color plates, this is a fascinating study into the armies, organization, armor, weapons, and fortifications of the Khazars.
The Khazars were one of the most important Turkic peoples in European history, dominating vast areas of southeastern Europe and the western reaches of the Central Asian steppes from the 4th to the 11th centuries AD. They were also unique in that their aristocratic and military elites converted to Judaism, creating what would be territorially the largest Jewish-ruled state in world history. They became significant allies of the Byzantine Empire, blocking the advance of Islam north of the Caucasus Mountains for several hundred years.
They also achieved a remarkable level of metal-working technology, and their military elite wore forms of iron plate armor that would not be seen in Western Europe until the 14th century. The Khazar state provided the foundations upon which medieval Russia and modern Ukraine were built.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024I have enjoyed reading Osprey books for many years. The coverage of WWII, WWI, Civil War, Crimean War, Napoleonic campaigns, Middle Ages and ancient world -including tactics, weapons and armored vehicles and aircraft is spot on IMHO.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2022Excellent work done on the Khazarian Empire who managed to be a stalwart between Christian and Islamic forces. They used their location as a major trading post.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019Control of the Steppes north of the Black and Caspian Sea in what became Russia was once contested by the Byzantine Empire, a newly militant Islamic Empire, and a variety of tribal Turkic and other tribal groupings. One such grouping, the Khazars, achieved a predominance that lasted roughly 300 years. The Khazars were unique among the peoples of the steppes in having converted to Judaism, but powerful because they mastered the tactics and equipment of heavy cavalry.
Authors Mikhail Zhirohov and David Nicolle provide the narrative in this Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book. The introduction spends some time introducing the Khazars in their time and place. Most of the book is devoted to a brief synopsis of their military campaigns and a concise but interesting discussion of their weapons and armor. In addition to a nice selection of color plates by Christa Hook, the book relies on ancient and modern artwork and modern archeology. The book may be challenging to follow for those readers not familiar with the period and the area, but it does provide an interesting introduction to a warlike people now largely forgotten.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020Awesome book/pamphlet. Cute and to the point’ History of the Khazars who are the today’s’ (Ashkenazi Jewish) people... who claims to be the true Jews... all Lies. They come from the line of Japheth Not Shem!!!! Genesis 10:2-3 *** Read it for yourselves...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021Excellent presentation on a topic that is not always easy to get info on.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020A typically handy "cliff notes" coverage of the topic. The authors try to be clear when something is speculative (e.g. much of the artwork). Nicolle keeps his raging Islamophilia to a minimum.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2023The Osprey series is a good standard in that they do their work to document the data. It is hard to find good info on the Khazars due to the actions of the former Soviets and Russians to surpress it. Much of the information was consistent to what I had already found, but it is good to see more interest in these people and the culture and history. It would be a good start to the topic, but not difinitive.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021The Khazars are one of those groups during the late Dark Ages that most military history buffs know little about. I've always been intrigued by them but knew little about them. Even in a college history class I took on the Byzantine Empire, they were only briefly mentioned. This book provides a good overview of the Khazar empire. It focuses on the chronology of the Khazars, the wars they fought, and their decline. Along with it, is a summary of their weaponry and armor. I gave the book a 4/5 stars because I thought the illustrations, which are always the hallmark of the various Osprey series, were a little disappointing. They seemed a little more "sketchy" and the colors more muted than I would have liked. Nonetheless, it's a good addition to my collection on central Asian armies during the Dark Ages.

I now have over 50 'Men at Arms' on my shelves at home. Being something of a history buff, and pretentious history know it all at dinner parties, I find these illustrated books very informative in terms of providing a succinct historical overview as wells as explaining the military aspects of the peoples and their wars during a specific timeline of their history.
