- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024I have lived in Thailand for 7 years, am fluent in Thai as well as having read several histories of Thailand. This book explains in verifiable detail the long history of the Thai monarchy and the Thai military thwarting Thai wishes for liberty and self determination.
Bumibol--Rama IX actually pronounced Pumibon---was a despot with a polished veneer. Vajiralongkorn is an unapologetic playboy and universally despised. I am deeply sad for my many Thai friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2024This book is banned in Thailand. Its interesting reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2024The life and reign of the 10th Chakri king is as dangerous to address as that of his father and supposedly benevolent predecessor, the 9th Chakri king. Indeed, many but not all of the contributors to this volume have taken tremendous risks in the service of truth and social justice, which makes this volume such a disappointment.
The anthropology piece opens with an historical blooper and goes downhill from there. The mis-referencing verging on amnesia here and elsewhere in the volume is almost funny -- but not.
The alliance of journalism and scholarship in the study of Thai kingship has long been necessary given the subject matter. In the age of social media, there's a point where the blurring of genres in the hands of the ambitious becomes more self promotion and Artful Dodger than serious scholarship. This leaves the reader with the problem of which contributors to trust. Given the editing or lack thereof, the answer, unfortunately, is no one, certainly not the uninitiated. One wonders how the above blooper and who knows how many others got past the editor, the readers, Yale Southeast Asia Studies and ultimately Yale University Press -- the distinction seeming almost deliberately confused, like volume itself. Using this as a textbook in university would be an act of malpractice.
