Helen Mirren: The Biography Hardcover – May 1, 2002

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Helen Mirren is one of the best-loved, most highly respected actresses working today, winning acclaim for her remarkable range and richly layered performances. Although she originally made her mark on the stage, it was her role as DCI Tennison, the gritty lead in
Prime Suspect, that really launched her career and won her a string of awards. She went on to a series of challenging roles in films like Caligula, The Comfort of Strangers, The Madness of King George, and Gosford Park, for which she received an Oscar nomination. In this new biography, Sunday Times journalist Ivan Waterman charts her life and her struggle to the top, her relationships with fellow actors, including Liam Neeson, and her marriage to film director Taylor Hackford.

Read about Dame Helen and see what so many fans are so avid about her movies and tv shows..a class act and a fast read!

Book was obviously written by a Brit for Brits - lots of idiomatic terms I'm not familiar with. Other than that, it is very poorly written with tons of superfluous information and bad grammar. Chronology was next to impossible to figure out. If I weren't a huge Helen Mirren fan I wouldn't have read it to the end. I was only able to glean the information I was looking for through dogged determination.

Just thumbing through this I found two errors. Russell Crowe
did not win back to back Oscars and Helen did not lose to
Susan Sarandon but to Dianne Wiest in 1994. Don't know how many
more there are. Too bad the author did this because it makes
me suspect that there are other inaccuracies. Dame Helen
deserves better. There are a lot of nice photographs included.

The greatest actress in the world deserves a masterpiece of a biography-and this book is no masterpiece. Aside from many inaccuracies, it's weirdly short on information about it's subject. Entire sections are about other people (eg. the inspriration for Jane Tennison-interesting, but not appropriate in a book about someone else!) The author seems to be trying desperately to fill his book, and too much of it is useless information. A real disappointment. While I collect every movie and item I can get my hands on that has Helen Mirren in it, not even I would buy this book (thankfully I found it at my library). Any pertinent information it contains can be found easily on the internet. I hope a good writer out there is planning on honoring this divine woman with a stellar biography. It's long overdue.

Victoria is so right-----Helen deserves a masterpiece and this is as lousy as his first go -- this one is supposedly updated, yet again, full of errors and loads of info about people other than Helen ! For now we must settle for the marvelous "In the Frame," and maybe someday we might get the real deal----but this is not it !

As a big Mirren fan, I enjoyed the recounting of the story of the making of Prime Suspect. I would question the suggestion late in the book that she's less sexually active with her husband. Mirren is a wonderful actress and woman and to me, still exudes sexuality. Can't imagine her not having a deeply sensual relationship with her gorgeous husband.
