Mitchell has a great grasp of the background stories that led to Hollywood’s portrayal of the US use of the atom bomb against Japanese and how the propaganda around this influenced popular opinion about atomic history.0

Dancing Girls?Definitively Atwood. Yet dark, even bleak, throughout. Her characters seem disconnected from the world, at odds with it. Dissociated. The stories force me to wonder what the author was going through at the time. It reminds me of reading Olive Kitteridge, a book that I felt should have included a link to a suicide hotline. While this is not as severe I had no feeling that anything would turn out positively for her characters. Glad to have read it; glad to be finished.0

Superb Investigation Of The Current Parameters Of Rising OceansGoodell is a remarkable writer, able to synthesize many disparate elements of climate change into a highly readable and understandable look into the near future. Our continuing denial of climate science, ignoring the almost daily catastrophes occurring around us, is brought out clearly here in ways that should be difficult to ignore but likely will be.0

Intriguing Critique In Fictional Form Of Big PharmaMy first Le Carre novel so I have nothing to compare it to. Too long winded and digressive to suit my tastes. Nevertheless it lays out a realistic panorama of the mishmosh of overlapping interests between governments, the science industry and profiteering by ruthless gangsters in their employ.0

Keep ‘Em Coming, MickAnother Grand Guignol episode from the author of the Slough House series. More bodies never seeing the light of day than in prior books yet as effervescently amusing and thrilling as its predecessors.0

Brilliant, Evenhanded Accounting Of The May 4th TragedyVanDeMark takes us through the precursors to the shootings, the event itself, various communities responses to the incident, the legal skirmishes lasting years and the aftermath for those wounded, the families of the deceased and the guardsmen involved. Despite its length there is little extraneous material; a tightly woven narrative that is engaging throughout.2

Quirky Humor And BloodshedHerron continues to provide pithy, insightful looks into the world of spy politics. The Slough House gang struggle on, achieving what seems unlikely by mishap, then saving the day despite the bosses disapprobation and lack of support.0

Be Aware: A Potential Solution To The Climate CrisisIntriguing, well written account of ocean and climate exploration. The author delves into climate science with some brilliant marine and climate professionals while discussing his own personal experiences with the oceans of the world. Scary and insightful account that opens up a possible planet saving course of action.3

Heartfelt, Beautiful StoryA wonderful tale from a man who clearly understands elephants and the bonds they share with their elephant families and human supporters. Wrenching at times but ultimately uplifting. Having experienced elephants in a South African preserve earlier this year it is clear the author understands thoroughly their wisdom, sense of family and community and their genuinely gentle nature.2

Another Top-rate Thriller From HerronThe Netflix series again did justice to translating this taught mystery to the tv screen. Herron is a terrific writer who knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. The novel has wonderful insights into the politics of espionage work. Jackson Lamb, the Slough House director remains as obnoxious and perspicacious as ever.0

Brilliant Suspenseful Intelligence CaperWonderful writing by a master. For those who saw the TV series, which adheres quite closely to the novel, you would not be disappointed to explore the written version. Packed with twists and turns as well as insights into the human experience this a mystery that is hard to put down.0

Amuse Bouche a la AtwoodA tasty little treat that leaves you wanting more. This is quite amusing if you enjoy wry humor (or rye humor).0

Enchanting Story Of An Elephant/Rhino PreserveHeartbreaking at times yet heartwarming throughout this picture of the conservation efforts at Thula Thula is not to be missed. Having been there in June of this year (2024) the book truly captures the excitement and awe of seeing these animals in their natural habitat. What a spectacular place, staffed by wonderful and caring people.Go if you possibly can; contribute if you are not able to go personally.0

Excellent Account Of The Development Of The Film Industry And the Intrigues Surrounding ScandalsWell written if somewhat talky relating of Hollywood in the late teens and twenties. Featured prominently are Adolph Zukor, Mabel Normand (closely involved with Chaplin and Arbuckle) and William Desmond Taylor. Plus an accounting of the role of Will Hays, seen now as the man who initiated censorship in Hollywood, but who actually found ways to circumvent the outcry of moralists who wanted to shut Hollywood down.0

Thorough And Engaging Biography Of MLK Jr.A very balanced and comprehensive telling of the activist’s life. Easily readable yet in depth coverage of the emergence and development of this outstanding leader in the fight for civil rights and against the war in Viet Nam.0

Still A Potent WorkGraves covers the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula in all their horrifying glory. Intrigues galore with enough murder and perversity to satisfy the bloodlust of the most avid readers.0

Fascinating And AggravatingIntriguing behind the scenes look at the production of Friedkin’s movies. Lots of great material regarding his struggles to get his inspirations on film. Not a man I would likely want to meet and yet, despite his refusal to make changes, he has remarkable insight into his limitations which are rife.“I embody arrogance, insecurity, and ambition that spur me on as they hold me back. And while I’ve been healed of physical wounds, my character flaws remain for the most part unhealed. There’s no point in saying I’ll work on them. I spend part of each day acting out my worst instincts while I try to conceal them from those I care about. Every one of my films, plays, and operas has been marked by conflict, sometimes vindictive.”1

Madness As A Personal And Social ExplorationVery well written consideration of Ginsberg, the man, and his major works. Dr. Weine had an ongoing relationship with the poet and social revolutionary which serve as the basis for this thoughtful investigation of Ginsberg’s impact on American and literary culture.0

Enlightening And TerrifyingIt is truly discouraging that so many who have worked in the nuclear field are, in the end, unhappy with what in retrospect were misspent lives. And despite their knowledge none have come close to ending the scourge and threat of nuclear winter. Jacobsen lays out in horrifying detail a potential sequence of events that leads to Armageddon. Would that world leaders were paying attention. Sadly this is unlikely.1

Incredible History, Badly MangledIt is difficult to believe that such an invaluable book as this is could have been published in its current form. Highly repititious and horribly disorganized the book is a travesty for both its author and editor. Nevertheless the documentation of US and Israeli complicity in attempting to overthrow the Egyptian government through a false flag operation (the attempted sinking of the USS Liberty) is a godsend given both governments attempts to destroy factual evidence and intimidate the seamen aboard the Liberty. This could be a five star book if properly edited.0
