RICHARD B. FRANK’S ARTICLE about the previously unknown death toll of Japanese troops and others due to American submarine campaigns, “Slaughter at Sea” in your April 2021 issue, instantly caught my attention. I became interested in the Pacific War when I was 12 years old, especially in the U.S. submarine campaign against the Japanese. The holy grail of resources on the topic was the Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee (JANAC) findings, referenced by Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison in his maritime histories and in Frank’s article. In 1973, I located the one and only copy in California—a goldmine of information.
