A Portal to Happiness

This story is about my grandparents’ back porch. It abutted a very small house on State Park Road on the fringes of Paris Mountain in Greenville, S.C. My grandparents moved there in 1975, and although it was a small two-bedroom, one-bath house, it was much larger than the one they were leaving behind. Best of all, the house sat on an acre of property, 90 percent of which was covered by mountain woods.
