here are plenty more books we couldn’t quite fit in. “Lesbian gunslinger fights spies in space” is the headline for Ciel Pierlot’s debut (8 February, (3 February, Harper Voyager). Taking place on an enchanted island ruled by capricious spirits, it sees two childhood enemies working together to discover why young girls are going missing. meets Indiana Jones in (3 February, Hodder). Leslie Vedder’s YA tale sees a treasure hunter teaming up with an axe-wielding huntswoman after being bound to a sleeping prince by pricking her finger on a magic spindle. We called Laura Lam and Elizabeth May’s y space opera “a good old-fashioned sci-fi B-movie romp”. The duology concludes with (out now, Gollancz), in which its motley bunch of female rebels must infiltrate the Empire to destroy the Oracle, an AI capable of programming the population into mindless drones. There’s also a follow-up to , Menna Van Praag’s tale of four daughters born to different mothers on the same day. Our reviewer didn’t rate it (“A headlong dash that’s mostly going in circles”) but we’ll flag (3 February, Bantam) for those who like it.
