I wanted to have a sweep that could take in both policy discussions in the corridors of the Kremlin and the everyday life the memoir by Luba Brezhneva [niece of Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev]. I reacquainted myself with Solzhenitsyn and biographies of Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev and Sergei Korolev, mastermind of Russia’s space programme. magazine’s online archive was an invaluable visual reference.
