Back in 1987, Dick Haley’s first year as the head of the personnel department, the Steelers needed a cornerback. Or three.

Coming off their worst season since 1970, the 1986 Steelers – after Dwayne Woodruff had torn up a knee in preseason – started John Swain, Harvey Clayton, and Chris Sheffield at cornerback, and Eric Williams at free safety.

Donnie Shell, 34, was still the strong safety. The top reserve on the back end was Lupe Sanchez.
