he kids roll large snowballs. Rather than tossing them at one another, they prefer to carry them around to show them off or roll them down hills for fun. Seeking peace and warmth, the adults lounge in nearby hot springs. Their faces flushed red, they exchange greetings or bask quietly with eyes closed. These creatures could easily be mistaken for humans, but here they are a different animal. They are the Japanese macaques (muh-KAKS), also known as the snow monkeys.
