James Heddon rare hand-carved factory board frog, 1898, 3 in., $30,750.

Fishing lures have been around for about as long as prehistoric humans devised ways to catch fish with their lures made of bone. The first civilization to make fishing lines, to which bronze hooks were attached as lures, was China.

Over the centuries, fishing lures have morphed into miniature works of art, andby collectors for their appealing designs, as well as utilitarian purposes and nostalgia. Though their original purpose remains the same—to catch fish—many people also use lures for home decor.
