About this audiobook

In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her ""little problem"" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the ""Queen of Spies"", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

Editor's Note

All the feels…

Set in post-WWII Europe, “The Alice Network” brings together two women from different generations and backgrounds. With espionage, scandal, redemption, and rage-provoking examples of at least five ‘isms,’ the story has a bingability score equivalent to “Game of Thrones: Season One.” In other words, get ready to stay up all night reading and feel all the feelings.

While some reviewers felt that the story could have been more exciting or had too much focus on sexual content, overall, readers highly recommend this book. Sorry. Chapter 15 and can’t do it any longer. Maybe if I read paper book and skip some parts ? I really wanted to like it. But it is just so monotone. There are lots of descriptions on other reviews. But this is my confession.....

I’m a big fan of historical fiction, but I found this book lacking. One of the storylines (Eve’s story in 1915) is brilliant and I wish the entire book could have been about her and the spy network. Chalie’s story in 1947 was unnecessary, long and boring.

It doesn’t make any sense that Charlie would go to such lengths to look for her cousin that no one else seems to care about. Their relationship was not portrayed well enough to justify. Why does Finn like Charlie? she has no personality or traits other than being pregnant and looking for her cousin. Mostly, she's an entitled brat, and he's perfect except for his angry outbursts that no one ever seems to mention ever again? If he miraculously fixed?

This book really didn’t need to be as long as it is, and after the 70% point it was difficult to get through until the ending which was good, albeit predictable.

Holy Poop-wads. That was a fun, dramatic and intriguing listen. Well written and superbly narrated. I could feel a bit of modern writing in the 1940s characters but still it was both believable and plausible. Once it got rolling it didn't stop. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Interesting premise, but disappointing execution. For one thing, it needed better editing. Too much of it felt like filler. For another thing, it’s a frame story, jumping back and forth between two timelines, WWI and post-WWII, respectively. I think it would have been stronger if she’d ditched the dual-timeline idea and only told the WWI story—her heart seemed more in it. In places, the tone felt too modern and anachronistic.

I was excited to read about a ring of women spies from WWI, but I just didn’t care for Eve, the main character, and I didn’t find her especially believable. For most of her chapters, I was either uninterested or annoyed. This is just an opinion—I know a lot of people liked this book and Eve—but I just wasn’t feeling it. I was also quite surprised to see that the single biggest horrifying part of her story was spoiled right off the bat in Chapter 1. That should have been the edge-of-my-seat, nail-biting, can’t-turn-these-pages-fast-enough part, and instead it really fell flat for me because I’d known it was coming since page 14. Seriously, she spoiled it on page 14. That’s the latter timeline, before we even get to a chapter from Eve’s POV. We pretty much see Eve’s arc before Eve even really begins. I also thought she showed poor judgment on a number of occasions; I know she’s young and scared and in the middle of a war . . . but she’s a spy, right? She was prepared for this, right? She shouldn’t be losing control at the first sign of trouble, and she shouldn’t have destroyed a possible asset and safeguard (and risked her cover) just for some immediate convenience. There were some brave (real) women who risked their lives in this spy network during this war, and I think these particular fictional adventures don’t represent their intelligence and heroism as fully as they might.

I thought the post-WWII romance plot was interesting. Charlie can be annoying at times, but I think she’s meant to be that way. She’s had some personal tragedy from the war, but she was never in the thick of things the way Eve was in WWI, so her character is somewhat lighter and contrasts nicely. She grows stronger during the story, too; she’s pretty awful (again, I think it’s intentional by the author) in the first chapter, but she comes into her own. She’s self-centered. She’s passive and air-headed. She’s a hot mess. Then she grows a backbone, becomes strong, becomes generous. I enjoyed these chapters, but they did make for a major shift in tone from the 1915 plot. It would have been a stronger spy story without Charlie’s segments, but I think Charlie was the only reason I kept reading. And yeah, it’s not the most believable storyline, and Charlie feels a bit too much 21st-century, but it’s certainly interesting.

Some final thoughts. From this book, I learned about a WWII atrocity that I’d never heard of before. I think it’s great when fiction helps us learn about fact and makes us curious to know even more. I also really liked the last third of the story. It took way to long for stuff to happen, but then when it did, it was really something. I raised my rating by a whole star because of the last third of this book. I also liked that the two timelines merged in the end, although it felt a little far-fetched to me. It was still gripping and well-written.

I kept listening to this hoping I would come upon why this book has been appearing on 'popular at the moment' lists. I got as far as Part 6 of 14 Parts. The characters are quite interesting but something didn't work for me - the pace, some cliches. Disappointing. I think books like this - long and slow and winding - are at the mercy of the mood you are in. It was a shame because I am definitely interested in the Alice network.

The character's math obsession felt forced to me, given her lack of rationale, and propensity for passion. The book picked up a lot towards the end, distinguishing itself from many of the other World War II novels I've read recently.

Based on Real-life Alice Network in France during the war and how many heroic women were recruited as spies gathering vital information to help the war efforts. Captivating story jumping from the past and present 1947 at the end of the WW2 when an american student comes to Europe seeking her cousin Rose, who has been missing during the war with no details of how or if she perished. Charlie Sinclair (American) seeks to meet a contact who may know the where abouts of her cousin through Eve Gardner (Alice network agent) Together they join efforts seeking answers and then redemption. Great Story, Audible Listen

This novel is tightly written; complex, terrifying, and triumpant. Filled with moments of meaning and joy, friendship and loss, strung together like diamonds and pearls and lumps of coal. The depths and heights of how humans treat each other.

Excellent book, and great narration. I was so absorbed by the story and the captivating characters. I will say that there are some scenes that are a bit upsetting in terms of violence, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a book about wartime.

Beautifully and heartbreakingly done. A story that will not be forgotten, filled with strong, smart, dedicated, truly inspiring characters that remind us of our inner strengths, values, and sacrifice. Patriotic to the core, women who should be remembered and cherished for centuries. They are the unseen, unimportant, and unimpressive ghosts of all females. Some play victim, some, play their part in Society. And then SOME, are our unknown heroes. This is THEIR story. And I feel it's a reminder as well. Of our own inner strength and courage. Beautifully written, I could not put it down. Filled with concern, fear for them and their safety, wanting to know MORE but hesitant and afraid to find out. Very gripping. I highly recommend.

The story is mind captivating, very easily switching from one time period to another. I liked listening to it. The important thing I liked about this novel is that its protagonist is a female and who is not an ideal woman, just a woman who went through a lot and is still standing.

This book was amazing! Loved the way that the partly-fictionalized story of the WWI French women's spy ring was tied to the mystery of how the main character's French cousin went missing during WWII. Briliant work, loved the strength of the damaged characters, and how it came together.

This book surprised me by how good it is. Set in WWI and post WWII. Very strong women run a spy network in German occupied France in WWI. What is amazing is this fictional novel is based on the real life Alice Network and their leader, code name, Alice Dubois.

Not quite up to par in my opinion as ‘The Huntress’ but still very good…. All the way to the end I was still hoping that rose was lily and lily was still somehow alive… so still a tiny touch disappointing for me. But still a fun and fascinating read.

Some of charlie’s story are not necessary for me and not really interesting. I hope they just focus on Eve’s story.
