From the beloved, critically acclaimed, bestselling author comes a spectacularly moving novel featuring Eilis Lacey, the complex and enigmatic heroine of Brooklyn, Tóibín’s most popular work in twenty years.
Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighboring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony’s parents, a huge extended family. It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.
One day, when Tony is at work an Irishman comes to the door asking for Eilis by name. He tells her that his wife is pregnant with Tony’s child and that when the baby is born, he will not raise it but instead deposit it on Eilis’s doorstep. It is what Eilis does—and what she refuses to do—in response to this stunning news that makes Tóibín’s novel so riveting and suspenseful.
Long Island is a gorgeous story “about a woman thrashing against the constraints of fate” (Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air). It is “a wonder, rich with yearning and regret” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis).
Editor's Note
Powerful and probing…
Toibin delivers the highly anticipated sequel to his bestselling novel “Brooklyn,” in which Eilis Lacey was torn between Ireland and America — and the love of two men. Now, 20 years later, Eilis is settled in Long Island with her Italian American husband, until a devastating betrayal sparks her return to Enniscorthy, Ireland, now both strange and hauntingly familiar. Quiet, powerful, and probing the effects of secrecy, “Long Island” is yet another stunning work by a masterful author.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Started off moving quickly, very slow middle and disappointing ending.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good listen
Liked characters but story slightly weak
Hope you like it - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Could not even finish this one. Very disappointing as I was looking forward to it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jesse Buckley!!!!I love her as an actress and as the narrator of this book, she brings a dimension of authenticity to Colm Toibin’s novel.
The writing is slow and nuanced; the characters are realistic, and nothing is taken for granted. Don’t forget to listen to Jesse Buckley’s interview at the end of the book because it’s definitely a treat. If you read the first book or saw the movie, (with a terrific Saoirse Ronan) , it’s a plus because you get to read this “sequel”, if you will, but this is definitely a standalone book and you don’t need to in order to get a full picture of the characters. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Follow on from Brooklyn but stands on its own just fine. Came to a sudden end I felt
