    Movie Magic Squares: Volume 1 contains 55 challenging movie-related text puzzles. Since you do not type in answers in this e-book, scratch paper might be needed as you work through a solution. In each Movie Magic Square, given the names of 6 movies (theatrical, TV, video, or animated), you are asked to determine the 4 actors who are missing from the puzzle.

    Movie Magic Squares puzzles work a bit like mathematical magic squares. Instead of rows, columns, and diagonals that add up to the same total, the actors in each row, column, and diagonal acted (or voiced or had an uncredited appearance) in the corresponding movies together.

    Hints are provided, and answers contain links to online movie databases. Using the hint for the puzzle, you can often figure out the solution if you know at least one or two of the movies and actors. If you can solve a Movie Magic Square puzzle without a hint, you are a movie knowledge virtuoso.

    Richard S. Levine has been designing and making games for over 30 years. He and his wife love to watch movies and make up entertainment games. This is his first puzzle book, and he has more in the works.

      Movie Magic Squares - Richard S. Levine

      Introduction

      A mathematical magic square has numbers that add up to the same total in every row, every column, and every diagonal. Movie Magic Squares are similar in that each of the actors in each row, column, and diagonal acted in a movie together. Further, the movie they acted in together is specified in the Movie Magic Square. Although the puzzles offered in this e-book are text only, the following is a visual example of a 2x2 Movie Magic Square.

      The object of each puzzle is for you, the reader, to guess who the four actors are. Most movies in this e-book are theatrical releases, but some are TV miniseries or video, and others are animated (voice actors). If you choose, you can see the list of actors – a hint – before guessing the answer. In case you are not ready to answer, you can also decide to go back to the table of contents.

      Although there are some movies that are not well known, or in some cases the actor may have had a small or uncredited role in a film, in many cases you can use your knowledge of the other films and actors in a puzzle to determine the final answer. I suspect that most people will use the hint – List the actors – for a majority of the puzzles, though you may figure out the solution without any help. See how many you can get!

      In the answers, you will also have online links to The Movie Database (TMDb) and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) so you can find out more about the movies and actors.

      If you find it difficult to keep track of the connections between the actors as you are attempting to solve a puzzle, you might keep a scratch pad of paper next to you. On my website, I will include a sample grid for Movie Magic Squares puzzles that you can print out.

      Sometimes, you may be able to determine who Actor A, Actor B, Actor C, and Actor D are based on the information above. You might, for instance, use you knowledge of which actor (Actor A) starred in The Bucket List and also in Anger Management and Something’s Gotta Give to jog your memory of who acted in the other movies. Often you may need a hint showing the names of the four actors – they are listed in random order.
