Chapter 1
It had been a trying time for the Caldwell family. They were embroiled in an emotional windstorm. A sudden new addition to the family was causing tremendous tension between father and daughter, and too many dangerous coincidences surrounding the family remained unexplained. A near-fatal incident involving a mother and her unborn child saw the family restoring their bonds and trying to sort through the recent events together.
Still in the hospital, the maternity staff kept a careful and watchful eye over Blair Caldwell. She had been transferred to a private room and was finally resting peacefully. The news that her child was all right set her mind and body at ease.
Cain, Marc, and Alondra left Blair’s room quietly. They strolled outside where they could talk and breathe the fresh midnight air; each was silently deep in thought.
Alondra walked between the two men she loved most in the world. One of us will bring you some more clothes tomorrow, Uncle Cain,
she said.
Thank you, Honey. You’re a good niece,
he replied. His voice was still shaky from the stress of Blair’s fall down the stairs.
They’d just stepped outside, and Marc stopped and placed a hand on his daughter’s shoulder. Does that mean you’ll be spending more time home?
he asked.
Her eyes went from his to the ground; her mind was running back through all of the recent events. She returned her eyes to his with sincerity. Yes, Dad, I’m coming home with you. You shouldn’t be alone,
she declared. She wanted to check something out; something she’d been feeling inside, but didn’t want to alarm either her father or uncle. She thought maybe she could run it by Geri.
Now, you know I’m not alone,
said Marc. I have a wife now.
He spoke the truth, but it wrenched his heart to say it.
Her face crinkled. You had to remind me, didn’t you? But it doesn’t matter. I’m gonna be home from now on, especially when Aunt Blair gets there,
she vowed.
Marc looked at his brother knowing what Alondra meant. But Cain turned and walked a small distance from them running his hands over his head. He felt he needed to say something, and didn’t know quite how to say it.
What is it Cain?
Marc asked.
Cain turned to face them. His eyes were sorrowful. I’m not gonna take Blair back there. I’m thinking about getting us a place of our own. I don’t want to take any more chances on this happening again,
he professed.
The three of them stood silently for a long time not wanting to touch what was said; each realizing how much had changed in such a small amount of time, and would never be the same.
Deidra paced back and forth waiting for Marc to come home. When she heard the roaring bike she was relieved he had finally come back. She ran to the mirror making sure her make-up was in place. She wore a sheer, black, lace negligee with a matching robe, and red heeled slippers. She brushed her hair quickly, and started downstairs to the living room. She put out some wine and sweet finger foods. She was going to make this a night to remember.
She stood seductively in the doorway, waiting like a black widow for her prey. She heard the footsteps on the porch, keys jingling; then the lock clicked. The door slowly opened. She watched the door intently. To her surprise, Alondra walked in.
Oh!
she cried. She’d all but forgotten the girl existed.
Alondra closed and locked the door; her eyes were fixed on Deidra. I see…
she said. Planning another night of seducing my dad into doing what you want?
Alondra smirked as she went past Deidra to the kitchen.
Deidra felt like blowing fire she was so angry. Where was Marc? She fumed. She then gathered herself and followed Alondra. She had to play nice if she was going to get anything out of that one. I didn’t know you were coming home or I would have prepared dinner for three,
she said, slithering into the kitchen.
I’m sure you didn’t expect me home tonight,
said Alondra. You’re dressed to kill,
she said smartly. She then took some bread, deli meat, lettuce, and tomatoes from the refrigerator and put them on the counter.
Look, Alondra,
said Deidra. I know you don’t like me, and I understand why.
Deidra went to the kitchen counter, watching Alondra make a sandwich, and slipped a knife from the dish rack. She silently approached Alondra from behind. She brought the knife over the Alondra’s head and down in front of her face.
Alondra, seeing the sharp object just inches from her face, jumped back into Deidra. Deidra placed an arm around the young woman’s waist and held her tightly. Be careful, my dear; accidents do happen,
Deidra hissed in Alondra’s ear.
Deidra’s breath on Alondra’s skin gave her a chill. Deidra then handed Alondra the knife, kindly, wooden handle first.
Alondra snatched it out of her hand and swung around to face her, pointing the knife directly. Yeah, accidents do happen! So take your own advice!
Alondra warned.
Suddenly, Deidra’s eyes shot past Alondra and conveniently broke into tears.
What in the hell is going on?
asked Marc. Neither had heard him enter the house, let alone the kitchen. He’d followed the sound of their voices and stumbled upon Alondra pointing a knife at Deidra.
Ask her,
Deidra said, feigning sadness.
All of the sudden I’ve lost my appetite,
said Alondra. I’m going to Geri’s. She won’t mind that it’s late,
Alondra huffed. She glared back at Deidra. But I’ll be back,
she cautioned. She left the house and jumped on her bike. She needed to discuss something with Geri right away.
Deidra was still sobbing when Alondra slammed the front door and rode away. She looked up at Marc, and slung herself into him. He kept his arms at his sides, unmoved. He was curious about the whole situation, but decided to let it wait. She was crying and mumbling some things he couldn’t make out.
Deidra, it’s late and I’m tired,
said Marc. I’m gonna take a shower and go to bed. I’ll talk to you in the morning.
He pushed her arms away and left the room.
She’d become so wrapped up in her act that she hardly noticed he had gone.
Chapter 2
Geri opened her door for Alondra and the young lady flew in quickly, hardly waiting for it to open fully. Geri knew she was upset. What happened? I left you in good spirits,
said Geri, taking a seat across from Alondra.
Oh, yeah, I looked for you all over then the nurse gave me your note about taking a taxi home,
said Alondra.
I didn’t feel it was appropriate for me to be there,
said Geri. Besides, the news from the doctor was encouraging. But that still doesn’t explain why you’re so angry. What happened after I left?
Alondra sat down on the sofa and shook her head. I can’t let Dad stay in that house alone with that woman. I don’t like her, and definitely don’t trust her,
she said. Ever since she showed up a few days ago everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. First, the Yukon broke down just days after my dad had it serviced. Then a step comes loose on the stairs? Come on! My dad and uncle would never miss a thing like that.
Alondra sat up, and leaned toward Geri.
Geri’s eyes narrowed taking in everything Alondra had just said. Then she saw something in Alondra’s face that concerned her. Alondra, what is it?
she asked.
Alondra looked from side to side as if making sure they were alone. I’m going to the garage tomorrow to find out what happened with the Yukon,
she explained. I’m also gonna have someone come over and check out that step.
Alondra nodded her head.
Geri’s face went grim. What are you getting at?
she asked.
Alondra looked deep into her eyes. Deidra is a psycho. I have a gut feeling there’s more to her than we know. I’m going to find out what it is,
she said. She then rose from the sofa and went to the window. She didn’t see the displeased expression on Geri’s face.
Alondra… I don’t think you should be trying to make something out of nothing,
said Geri. Cars break down, and freak accidents happen every day,
she said, hoping to relax the girl for her own good.
Alondra turned to stare at her. Then imagine this,
she said. "A person
