Introduction
Let me begin by telling you a story that begins in the late 1980’s which involves your humble narrator. At that time I was been out of college a few years and had a job as a caseworker for a community mental health program assisting adults with chronic mental illness.
Those of you familiar with that type of social service work know that it has a certain bittersweet quality about it. On the plus side you get to assist people who normal
society often shuns. And quite often these folks, in spite of having to cope with consequences of mental illness and often substance abuse as well, were often rather interesting characters.
The big downside is that the pay is quite low and the chances for advancement are limited. This often led to staff members burning out and leaving the field altogether.
Indeed I remember at the time biting on my lip one night as an acquaintance was whining incessantly about the low
starting pay of the sanitation worker job he had just started-which was about 5 grand a year more than I was making with a better benefits package to boot! And while I have nothing but respect for the tough and valuable job these men perform, the entry requirements were not exactly rigorous and certainly did not require 4-6 years of college.
