An Irrational Decision?
Most suicides (in the Western World) are called mentally ill. Or, if you prefer, the mentally ill commit most suicides. Suicide is considered an aberrant reaction to life. But is it?
Take another instance of a person walking towards death. A man sees a child stranded on an island in a rising, icy river. He decides to attempt to save her. Both of them die. Rather than being scorned as a suicide, the man is a hero. He's a hero because he was trying to save another life. Fair enough. His impulse was based on selflessness and was an attempt to aid society.
But suppose they survive. He is interviewed and explains his motives: I had to help, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't.
