Prologue
‘Do animals fall in love?’
I posed that question to a friend of mine who loves animals. He has two horses, three dogs, two cats, a cow, two goats, and a fat little miniature pig that share the farm he calls home. He said that from what he had observed over the years living closely with his beloved pets was that they seemed to have developed a sincere attachment for one another, -- except for the cats—but that he didn’t think animals could attain the deep devotion of affection – Love -- that we humans experience. As for cats? He said that even if he were wrong about animals not being able to realize that level of devotedness for someone , it was definitely out for felines because they’re just too independent, too self-absorbed.
For years I was inclined to believe that theory of his about cats, until one day I heard about a series of events concerning two cats, Sami One Eye and Mr. Big Foot, that changed my mind; it made me believe, without any reservations, that cats do fall in love. In those events,
Sami One Eye and Mr. Big Foot survived the tragedies that befell them only because of the great love that they had for one another. How love saved their lives fascinated me. I’m sure, as you read the story of those events, you will be just as bewitched by their trials and tribulations and how love was their savior, as I was. Here then, is that love story. Enjoy.
Chapter One
It was one o’clock in the morning and I had just come out of the back door of Joe’s Bar and Grill, -- that led to an alley -- when I spotted the most attractive dame I’d ever seen. And get this, she was walking around the area nervously, which made me wonder what she was up to?
Now wait a minute, I know what you’re thinking: Why was I leaving by the back door of Joe’s place, and what was that beautiful young thing doing in a dark alley at that hour of the night, right? Well, if you must know, that’s the way I always leave that bar because the less attention I draw to myself these days the better it is for me; as for what that gorgeous broad was doing there (?) I didn’t have the foggiest idea. However, I found out soon enough, as you’ll see as my story unfolds.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing because that babe was a sight for sore eyes: She had long, luscious, shiny black hair that seemed to glow in the dark, the glorious tresses augmented by a diamond studded gold band around her neck. She had great big beautiful eyes that changed colors as she stared at me. And her gams were not to be believed: they were slim and shapely and the longest I’d ever seen. As for the way she moved (?) well, there should be a law against it. To say that she was out of this world is to put it mildly because you’d swear you were looking at a movie star.
Suddenly I was struck by lightening. There was no doubt about it: Cupid had walloped the daylights out of me. It was love at first sight. I was hooked. I had to meet her. However, that presented me with a problem because it was obvious that I frightened her. In a way I understood how she felt. After all, coming face-to-face with a big, rough, muscular, forbidding character like me in a dark alley at one o’clock in the morning can be disconcerting, to say the least. I’m sure I gave her the willies. I’m also certain that I gave her the impression that I was a playboy on the make, which, of course, I am. But, hey, that’s another story. The fact is, however, -- even if I say so myself -- that beneath my tough, menacing, overpowering exterior lies a loveable, sentimental pussycat. I may be frightening on the outside but inside I’m a fuzz ball, a loving, understanding guy that’s sensitive to all living creatures, man and beast alike. Unfortunately, that gorgeous dame wasn’t aware of any
