SECTION I: Meditation on the Sephiroth
Introduction
This is a work designed to introduce you to daily meditations upon the Sephiroth as they occur in the Western mystery tradition. While Western Ceremonial forms derive ultimately from the Kabbalah as it was traditionally taught among the Jewish people, there are stark differences between Western Ceremonial Magic and the Kabbalah proper. Therefore, Western Ceremonial Magic may also be termed a Hermetic Kabbalah
or, in some instances, even a nominally Christian Kabbalah.
The chief difference lies within the former's strict adherence to Jewish law and historical norms, while the latter, generally, is interpreted in light of Greek and Egyptian theosophy, with a higher stress upon astrological correspondences. In lieu of this, the Western Grimoires may be considered to be part of the Christian or Hermetic Kabbalistic tradition, many of which incorporate obviously European elements while nonetheless deriving many of their forms from the original Kabbalah. Opposite this, there are texts which contain much the same aims as the the texts of Western Ceremonial Magic which are couched in purely Jewish terms, such as the Sixth
and Seventh
books of Moses. While these texts do contain large, complicated seals for the planets in their Theurgic and Goetic aspects, they reflect a far more worldly outlook than the traditional Kabbalah possesses and, furthermore, these seals are used within a more detailed, self-sufficient system which is beyond the scope of this work. This being the case, if one is to work with the planets in a purely Judaic manner, one need look to those practices associated with the Hekhalot as well as the Tree of Life. While these cannot, perhaps, be taken to be magical practices in the same sense as other styles, they nonetheless are a way to access and commune with the energies described. Like many of the practices found in Western Grimoires, they too are part of larger systems.
The Sephiroth—quite literally—are the pre-existential elements of existence. That is, they are what exists prior to the manifestations of existence in the form of Platonic Ideas. In becoming intimate with them & aware of them as realities, one will develop a heightened awareness of the process of existence itself & be able to manifest change more readily—an invaluable power in the performance of all magics.
Having said that, two points should be made: the first is that, in evoking or invoking a planet, one cannot but be made aware of a portion of its nature as one of the Sephiroth. Therefore, to evoke the planet Mars or a related spirit or God, one also evokes that quality of Geburah in its capacity. Further, the Sephiroth are not
